with phones like this, that have GPS, if you download Google maps, does it work as a sat-nav or do you have to pay for the data you receive?

That's what I thought may be the answer. I don't need sat nav on the Isle, its not too hard to learn! When I'm off Isle, you have to pay for all the data you use and it is at a high rate (like using data when you are abroad). If I could find a decent phone that could have the maps downloaded on to a memory card, and used in the same way as a normal sat nav, that would be perfect for me and my occasional need for sat nav.

As long as threads are clearly marked, so readers know that they are opening an non-football related message, then I have no problem with people trying to sell stuff, promoting businesses, talking politics etc. I do spit the dummy a bit when multiple off topic threads appear that are on the same off topic subject (like three X-Factor threads!) but generally its not a problem. I can even live with 'X-Factor 39' having a different thread to 'X-Factor 38' et-al.

Now, download maps on to a memory card then use the GPS in a phone for a free sat-nav. Does such a beast exist?

Nearly. There's a few free satnav applications (I only know those for iPhone) but they rely on a data connection. There's non-satnav applications, i.e. GPS apps, which can download map areas wherever there's a connection, i.e. wifi at home, but they only provide a direction, not navigation (check out motion-x).

The free satnav apps use http://www.openstreetmap.org/, I've tried some and I've deleted them all. Not even close to picking decent routes, yet.

It's very rare I need one because I'm happy with a map but occasionally it would be handy. For example, earlier in the year I was in London and got caught in a wrong lane that took me on to a dual carriageway. I ended up totally lost, going past Lords (north of river) trying to get to Battersea (south of the river) on a dark wet night, using only my sense of direction and stopping at a couple of petrol stations to look at an A to Z!

You haven't said what phone you have. For an iPhone, I didn't realise Navfree used downloaded maps

I've got a Nokia Xpress Music at the moment, not sure if/when I'll upgrade. Sure (part of Cable & Wireless) have dropped prices for broadband if you have a mobile contract, so I can have a £10 contract & broadband for the price of my current broadband. The £10 tariff has free mobile broadband so I'm tempted.

D'oh! Not only does 'such a beast exist' but I already have it! By default it tries to download data to improve the speed of the functionality but if set correctly, it works for free using Nokia maps and "GPS" instead of "AGPS" (Assisted GPS).
