Sammy's Sending Off

Sammy's Sending Off

Postby marky No.1 » Sun Oct 10, 2010 11:41 am

Sammy has a habit of controlling the ball near the touchline as it comes towards the dugout, usually trapping it thne a quick shimmy and a dink on to his shoulder then back to the player. On this occasion it was deemed that the ball was still in play. He had already had a go at the liner for suggesting his eyesight was slightly impared
The Ref came over and gave him a warning. The 4th official didn't like being outdone and was constantly getting on Sammy's case. Turner was ignoring most of the bickering but when he through his 2 penneth in, Sammy went fliiping mental. The Ref came over and told Sammy he had already been warned so off he went. Shortly afterwards the Police arrived to seperate the warring dugouts.

Not wanting to be too far from proceedings, Sammy found himself in a spare seat closeby and within minutes had been offered a seat directly above the dugout where he was watched by the 4th as he sneaked down the side to organise the Subs. Great Entertainment

All in all the 4th Official didn't control the situation very well I.M.O.

Will Sammy get a caution or some kind of touchline ban for this?

My understanding was that Sammy was told by the ref to go and sit in the dug outs for a while which Sammy (as a true gent ;) did to cool off.

A few minutes later,Sammy got back onto the toughline and was reported to the ref by the young kid of a linesman, resulting in Sammy being sent off and deciding to sit with the 'gentry' of Block C for most of the remainder of the game.

Turner the Worm (for want of an acceptable description) made matters a lot worse than they need have been, by getting involved and clearly enjoying every minute of it.

Sammy had the last laugh but Turner didn't stay around after the final whistle, making a very quick exit from his dougout to the changing room without even a word of congratulatios.

The 4th Official in the skirmishes was Ross Joyce, an ex. footballer who at the age of 20, according to this article, was sent on a Refereeing course for swearing at a Referee :o

"A FOOTBALLER ordered to complete a refereeing course as punishment for a foul-mouthed tirade has become one of the top officials in the country.Ross Joyce saw the error of his ways after he was sent off in a youth match six years ago for swearing at the man in the middle. As a result Ross, from Eston, near Middlesbrough, was told to complete the six-week refereeing course at the nearby Southland Centre. The 20-year-old took full advantage of his penalty and, from a pool of 30,000 officials, has gone on to become one of the best in his field. He now acts as an assistant referee and fourth official in the football league, officiating games in the Championship, Coca Cola League One and Two and hopes to be rubbing shoulders soon with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson. Ross is employed by Professional Games Match Officials, for Pertemps Coachright."I wouldn't describe myself as foul-mouthed. It was a one-off - I was actually a quiet lad. It was a cup game, which was important, and I lost my temper, got a bit upset and swore at the referee, so he sent me off for it," he said."The club I was playing for recommended I did the course and it went from there."I love being a referee. It's very enjoyable and exciting as every game brings a new challenge. It's a great way to be involved in the game and although it takes a lot of commitment, it's definitely worth it come a Saturday afternoon."Refereeing also helps me in my day job as a sports development coach as it's about working with people and managing situations - and it also helps to keep me fit."Ross has recently been promoted to level two of the national list of panel referees, six months after his promotion to the national list of assistant referees back in December. He is the youngest assistant referee in the country at that level and the youngest panel referee, which will see him take charge of Conference football next season as well as Premier League and Football League reserve matches. Some of Ross' games have already grabbed the attention of the media. In one, he needed a police escort from a women's match between Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea after he sent off three Rovers players and the manager."

Interestingly, as a seat was sought for Sammy to sit in following his ejection, the security staff suddenly got all officioius and self important. Despite having been in my seat since before the game started, having shown my season ticket to at least three people on the way in, some tiny little man in a black jacket demanded to see my ticket and told me I was in the wrong seat. When the error of his ways was politely pointed out and supported by a member of the football club staff, did he apologise for being a rude little shot? No he did not. What's worse, during this little charade, we went and scored! Wasn't until late last night on the football league show that I got to see the goal!. For want of a better turn of phrase, grrrrr!

And all this (I think) because I had the temerity to take a photo of Sammy as he was sitting in the stand. I'd taken my camera along as with it being the "official" opening I thought there might be some interesting photo opportunities. But no, it was more a patting ourselves on the back process, with some nice, probably heartfelt, if unheard, words from the centre of the pitch.

But at least we won!

I think he's just making the point forcefully that it is Mr Turner's round. Or maybe he's a bit less than impressed that Mr Turner was attempting, with the help of the fourth official, to referee the game himself.

If Sammy had just apologised or whatever for

Postby Arnside Red » Sun Oct 10, 2010 6:12 pm

kicking the ball whilst it was still in play instead of arguing with the ref re this he wouldnt have got went off, , sometimes he needs to calm down a bit, after one of the was it out desciions wit h the liner in the first half he was still moaning to the liner 2 mins later, I know he is passionate etc but sometimes you habe to accept situations instead of making the issue worse

The ball was going out of play. No-one on the field was near enough to do anything about it. Sammy did a clever little back-heeler as it came off, pretty much like the frequent 'catch the ball and throw it back' or 'trap it and side foot it to the thrower' those in the manager's area often do during games.

It may have touched his foot just on the line but, whatever, it was summat and nowt.

The fourth official, correctly, went over to tell Sam to stay in his area and that the ball may not have actually gone over the line when his foot touched it . Sammy was having a bit of a laugh with him. The ref came over with a huge grin on his face and reiterated to Sammy that he really should stay in his box - but all very light-hearted and good humoured.

THEN Turner strode across very aggressively pointing his finger into Sammy's face and swearing quite profusely. Completely and utterly OTT as it was all being sorted out properly by the officials. Sammy had a go back at Turner.

It looked to have calmed down and Sam had been asked to sit in the dugout and not get involved again.

Turner wouldn't let it go and continued his obscene tirade a bit later. Sammy had a go back and, to defuse the situation and because (technically) Sam had been in the wrong, the ref sent him to another seat up in the stands.

Turner looked a real nasty piece of work. No need for it at all. Sammy wasn't trying to hold up play or keep the ball away from Shrews players, it was just a bit of fun and it was being dealt with by the officials.

And, yes, I saw and heard it all very clearly - it was about 10 yards from where I was sitting.
Is the glass half full or half empty? Mmmm? hard to say - but it does look like there's room for more beer!

I sit up behind the dug out and thought that the ball hadn't crossed the line when Sammy neatly hit it. Couple of issues - firstly although deserved of a chat with Sammy, the ball hadn't gone out of play and play should have carried on. Techincally as the Morecambe player caught the ball, the result should have been a direct free kick for Shrewsbury. But it did seem that the reaction of the officials was a little one-sided. I wonder if the referee's report mentioned anything about the Shrew's manager's language given the closeness to the crowd and the many influential kids around. (albeit the last bit is a little tongue in cheek).

Ian Holloway didn't get sent off against Blackburn but because of his language he has received a touchline ban with no contact with the players at the forthcoming Man. City game. He was also fined $9500
