Sammy to Strengthen

Postby Ntini » Thu Sep 16, 2010 8:38 am

In his interview this week, Sammy said he had a loan deal lined up but then he went to a club in a higher division. I just had a look through last week's loan deals, and those who went to higher clubs on loan were:

Danny Ward [Bolton - Coventry] Loan (18yo striker)
Danny Rose [Tottenham - Bristol City] Loan (20yo winger)
Gavin Williams [Bristol City - Yeovil Town] Loan (30yo midfielder)
James Vaughan [Everton - Crystal Palace] Loan (22yo striker)

I'm guessing it wouldn't have been Williams, because surely we don't need another central midfielder. Whichever of the rest he looked at would have been a pretty big signing.

I wonder who he now has his eyes on???

That would be my guess, despite what you say.

I notice also that A. Triallist turned out for the Ressies last night.

Sammy's confirmed to me this morning that the player we're looking to bring in is indeed the defender who played in the reserves last night.

Now, I wasn't there, but the trialist in question was Tony Capaldi, formally of Cardiff and Plymouth.

It looks like it should be tied up in time for the weekend and would be a permanent (but perhaps short term like Brown) deal.

Sammy interview in full is just downloading now, I'll post it shortly.

Btw, Jevons is definately out on Saturday - still has a massive bruise on his face.

Hmmm. Capaldi was made to look very ordinary by Kettering when he was on loan at Leeds last season. So ordinary that he barely featured for the rest of his loan spell. Also played at left back. Not convinced he's quite the player we need to get us winning games...

Capaldi played the first 45 at right back. He left the ground sooner into the second half. Not sure if Sammy was there but the lad looked OK but difficult to judge v Tranmere Res.

Oh C.C We missed you

this player must be good enough to have a international cap with Northern Ireland

Do not think Morecambe ever had a international player b4.

Well can not wait for the interview anyway.

Off two Essex Sunday got new job and will go Barnet and Stevenage away

I like the sound of this signing. Capaldi has a decent background about him and has played in the higher divisions. tough time for past couple of seasons but maybe settling down at a club like ours could do him the world of good.

anyone know if he featured in the F.A. cup final for cardiff?

He's got 20 odd full caps.

Sammy was there last night to watch him.

Anthony Charles "Tony" Capaldi (born 12 August 1981 in Porsgrunn, Telemark) is a Norwegian-born Northern Ireland international footballer, who plays as a defender. He is also a long throw specialist. He is currently without a club after being released by Cardiff City.
Trials pre-season 2010

Capaldi then traveled to the Netherlands to join Plymouth Argyle's tour of the country on trial. He started the 1-0 win over NAC Breda. He then joined Crystal Palace on trial, and played against Bromley on the 27th of July 2010 in a 0-0 draw, in a pre-season friendly. He is currently training with Hearts at Ricarton.

He's obviously being tracked by some decent teams, if we can get him then he'll definately improve the team, and it says he's a long throw specialist aswell which is something we haven't really had in the last few years and could turn out to be a decent weapon, you just need to look at stoke and rory delap to see how much havoc it can cause!

Wonder why he wants a short term deal until January?

then again.....who cares..........if its a quality signing for 4mths or a poor one for longer then i'll take the shorter one anytime and look for a replacement as time goes by.

and the important bit is;
"The last I heard something was Monday (13th Sept) when they said they were going to speak to the chairman and I've heard nothing since.

"I don't know what was happening. We were only talking about a deal until January anyway and I don't know if Lee coming back sooner than was first expected affected it or not.

The manager seemed pretty keen, but nothing happened. I have been trying to sort out one or two other things in the meantime.

"I'm speaking to a few clubs so, hopefully, I will get something sorted."

huh another defender :?

well surely the problem with the team, is scoring goals from a attacking point of view with the idea of keeping teams pegged back in there own half away from our goal

Makes sense, get a few games, play well and maybe attract a bigger club (while helping us with a bit of quality and experience).

Could play left midfield and release Brown to play a more central box-to-box role perhaps?

Maybe Sammy is looking to play him at left back and move Wilson to left midfield, i know we have tried this before without any great success but if Wilson could be converted to play wide left then the pace he would bring to that position would give us a much greater attacking threat than we have at present.

Keith Hill managed to convert Perkins into a successful midfielder from a left back even though Harvey failed in his attempt to achieve the same thing, so maybe its worth another go.

Possibly he might not pick up as many bookings as well which would be a bonus, lets face it we desperately need some pace in the side when we are attacking and i cant see how else we are going to get it unless we are going to sign someone else.

Doesnt the manager realise we need some bloody forwards, cant understand when the team have only scored a hand full of goals he decides to bring in another defender, very strange.

hmm i now have a hunch SM is going to play this new lad at left-back, and is going to teach Wilson a lesson about his discipline/temperament and right for first team football

Couldn't agree more.

By the way Capaldi is probably ear marked for the right hand full back position judging by last night.

Still think it's a goalscorer we need. Attack for me is the best form of defence.

I agree completely and as someone mentioned the team is really missing some pace. At the moment the opposition defenders are facing up field all game and defending what is in front of them which as a defender you prefer. Maybe having a forward with pace who can turn them round, make them nervous and pull them out of position will open up space for others.

He played in the fa cup final in 2008 against Portsmouth. Was there first choice left back, and can play on the wing aswell.

i think what the team is missing is somebody who's a direct threat and not shy of shooting at goal making the goalkeeper work! like Le Fondre did for Rotherham last year and looks like repeating it(shoot on sight!)

note i wish we'd kept hold of Wayne Curtis the lad puts himself about physically just as good as Mullin, but Curtis as more to his game he can run with the ball at defenders and is not shy of shooting at goal

to be honest id have him before Mullin or Jevons anytime pitty he never got a fair crack as a striker in L2
