Morecambe's rivals

Morecambe's rivals

Postby seasonsinthesun » Fri Aug 27, 2010 10:49 am

Who do you all consider are our greatest rivals during our different eras?
Or teams we have never really liked!
I would say: traditionally will always be them from over the river
Barrow in the Northern Premier League
Also: Southport and Chester in the Conference days
Now: Accrington(though maybe some of you don't mind them)

Dont think lancaster can be classed as rivals as i've never known them to be in the same league as us. I'd say accy are our rivals.....and funny enough Bradford although soon i dont think they'll be in our league either :D
Get over it ;)

Sorry I'm showing my age, in the 70s they (can't bring myself to say their name, how I still HATE them!!) used to finish above us in the Northern Premier League, and always raised their game when they played us, they used to have quite a good record at Christie, it used to make me sick.

And speaking of L@nC@$ter C***, I can remember when we played them pre-season last season, one of their few and far between fans having a C*** shirt on which was proudly emblazoned on the back, "We 8 Shrimps".

Whatever.

Barrow were always our main rivals in our NPL days for me.

Today? Would have to say Bradford. Certainly not Accy. Coley is a legend.

And another one to ponder over, Fleetwood Town.

They came up into the NPL Premier Division ready for the 1988/89 season and they came to Christie twice that season (League and F A Trophy) mob handed.

And then, lo and behold, in the Summer of '89 we poached their manager and the majority of their squad and the rivalry intensified somewhat !

Talking of them that play over the river, I knew someone who supported Halifax,so last season we went to watch L*** C*** v.Halifax.
About halfway through the first half, and from out of nowhere, came a chant ,"We hate Morecambe, we hate Morecambe." Obviously, old habits die hard.

Chorley as well were rivals for some time during the NPL.

Our ATS Final wins of 85/6 and 86/7, us both fighting it out for the League Championship the following season in 87/88 (Stimmo and one of their players literally fighting it out at Victory Park I seem to recall !!)
