Barrow away

Exactly.

I always attend and look forward to pre-season games with excitement to begin with (probably due to not having seen the Shrimps play since May!!), but after about half an hour or so I tend to lose interest and question my sanity for attending, as they descend into meaningless kickabouts with gluts of substitutions etc etc etc.

Some thoughts on last nights match from the Official Holker Street Newsletter ..........

SOME MORE THOUGHTS ON THE MORECAMBE GAME
By John Little

It's not often I enjoy friendly matches for the football, but tonight's against
Morecambe was good to watch. There were some great passing moves as well as good
runs from Goodfellow and Rutherford, and yes, Boyd ran the show well in the
middle well assisted by Donnelly. Think the referee went easy on Morecambe by
disallowing a second goal by Walker for handball, even though Jase had his back
to the ref, who also let their keeper off with his handling of back-passes. The
only downsides were a booking for Shez that hopefully won't be reported and
Chadwick leaving the field injured. Although their keeper was shocking, there
was a great one-handed save in the first half and as mentioned, we had two shots
in the same attack cleared off the line in the second half. Rutherford's second
goal came from a good run and then he shot from outside the area that curled
into the top corner, and was the pick of the goals.

Good performance from us, but can we play some decent opposition next match, at
least Windscale scored against us! On Morecambe's performance it looks like
their ground will be ready, but they were truly awful and a few of their fans
who travelled round the Bay were none too happy.

We were awful but yes, it was the first pre-season game (or second if we include the behind closed doors game - which we should do as seen as thats what most of our pre season will be including). Saw enough to decide not to bother attending any more friendlies anyway!

I hope we have arranged a decent number of behind-closed-doors games because we are seriously lagging behind Barrow in terms of fitness, and therefore, a lot of other clubs I would assume.

Fitness, organisation, leadership, confidence on the ball, position play, pride and Passion, some shots on Target and not as many passbacks so Baz isn't dizzy by half time and we will be OK :D

You might want to remind him (and your defenders) about the backpass rule as well. You were lucky the ref was being kind to you last night.

Yes there was one inparticular that should have been a free kick about 18" from the goal line. I think the Ref was confused as he couldn't believe both teams were kicking towards the same goal in the 1st half!

Morecambe from: Roche, Moss, Wilson, Scott, Harding, Stanley, Maddix, Drummond, Mullins, Jevons, Duffy, Wainwright, Haining, Parish, Spencer, Wraight, Owens, Clark, Cowperthwaite.

i count six + one new player + one player on loan = very unfamiliar

3 trialists, 3 new lads signed from the youth team. Clark and Cowperthwaite looked pretty good and all, Wraighte only came on for 2 minutes at the end

no formation last night

Postby Arnside Red » Wed Jul 21, 2010 9:19 pm

it was an utter shambles, freindly or not, first half was nearly a full first team and the barrow lads ran the show, fitter, quicker, more football brain and to be honest made us look awful, if Mullin cant outjump conference players well, i know it was a freindly but quite frankley it was embarrasing to watch, it seemed to be men against boys, Barrow were a physical side and maybe we kept clear of tackles etc, who knows, esp when Stumpy (sheridan came on), he's lost none of his old aggression (former Barnsley premiership hero), a lot of work to be done before the season starts me thinks

"GOING into this pre-season friendly, some bookmakers had Morecambe as low as 14/1 to challenge for the League Two title next season.

But for the near 500 hardy fans inside Holker Street on a damp night, you would have been hard pushed to know which of these teams the bookies were talking about – the ones in red or the ones in white and blue."

To be honest, I can see Barrow pushing near the play off places at least this season.

They've had a good few years under their joint management team of Bayliss and loose cannon Sheridan, reaching the FA Cup 3rd round in two successive seasons, and of course winning the Trophy.

Maybe not actually reaching the Play Offs, but mark my words, they'll have a good season.

B ugger. Did I really say that ??!!
