I didn't go to this world cup, but have now spoken to plenty who did. Only going off their comments, but generally it seems there would've been less of an atmosphere without them. From past world cups I can tell you that any real atmosphere is pretty hard to build because of the ticketing system. So many fans from 32 or more countries buy tickets which are not section allocated that you don't get huge groups of people who are normally together. There really is pitifully little singing and anything else is just random shouting which you get in a pub.
Every now and then you will get a small section raising a song, but simply not wnough people join in to really make it.
I would be inclined to just go with the flow for a while, let people bring them and see how long before the novelty wears off, which it will. At a big tournament you get caught up quite easily and things like this seem great, not unlike some dodgy beer or food when you have a foreign holiday, but seldom tastes the same when you get home.
