Shrimps team of decade on Radio Lancs this Tuesday

Postby radio_lancs » Sun Jun 27, 2010 7:08 pm

On Tuesday evening 6-7, Derek Quinn and Glen Cooper will be joining Andy Bayes on BBC Radio Lancashire to name their Morecambe team of the decade from 2000-2010.

You can have your say by emailing lancashiresport@bbc.co.uk or replying to this thread and we'll give them a mention.

If you live outside the county you can listen live at bbc.co.uk/lancashire and via the i-player for a week after the programme.

Don't forget about this on Radio Lancs tomorrow Tuesday between 6pm and 7pm.

Should be an interesting programme.

I've put forward who I think should be the manager! ;)

Some good choices Jeff but I think Brian Healy just misses out of the 'last decade' qualification if I remember correctly.

Damn, you're right Glen. Left in '99 (just checked). How do I fit Lee Elam (in his first spell) into my team?
I know .... many hated him after he left for Halifax etc. but he was an exciting/pacey/flair player who lifted 'bums off seats' - and I enjoyed watching him and didn't buy into the slagging him off scene afterwards. I was just gutted he'd left.

Jeff's is a good side. Perks in for Healy as he's ruled out but also, I think I'd just about go for Barry over Joe. I think Joe will be the better keeper in time because he's so young but as they were when with us, Barry just shades it for me.

Manager of the decade is a tough decision, what with so many to choose from!

I personally wouldn't have Talbot in. He was a good player but I thought he dived too much to try and win penalties when he could easily have tried to stay on his feet and score anyway!

Mine (of the last decade) would be:

1. Joe Lewis
2. Ryan McGivern
3. Jim Bentley
4. Dave McKearney
5. Dave Perkins
6. Stewart Drummond
7. Michael Twiss
8. Carl Baker
9. Wayne Curtis
10. Danny Carlton
11. Gary Thompson
HOWAY THE SHRIMPS!!!!!

Good show, couple of picks that I couldn't understand. The show was Morecambe's best side in the noughties, I'd assume part of the criteria was there performances at Morecambe in the respective position that they were being selected for? With this in mind I wouldn't have either of Perks or Craney in midfield. Perkins who went onto better things in midfield elsewhere was terrible for us when he played there, so much so that we let him go. Craney was injured for most of last season and we didn't really get to see his quality, as such I don't think he can get a spot in Morecambe's best side over the last 10 years purely on how well he has played against us. I'd have gone for:

GK Roche
RB McKearney
LB Perkins
CB Bentley
CB Hardiker
RM Thompson
LM Baker
CM Drummond
CM Hunter
CF Jackson
CF Twiss

Subs
Curtis
Rigoglioso
Elam
Carlton
Mawson
Haining
Stanley

Note that loan players can't be selected.

Andy Fensome was a good shout, as Glen and Derek said on the show a solid and consistent player with the ability to play his way out of trouble. Misses out on my side due to the versatility of Haining who can cover a number of defensive positions. When you look back we have had some brilliant players over the past decade, so much so that I can't find room for the likes of Norman.

Just been listening to the Radio Lancs show from last Tuesday.
It is all about opinions, and mine is that I don't go along with Glen picking certain players based on having gone on to a higher level after leaving Morecambe i.e.Perkins, Thompson, Baker.
I think the final team chosen was excellent, but I still feel it has to be chosen based on how the player performed whilst at Morecambe. I understand the argument that since 2007 we have been at a higher level, so players like Haining come into the argument, but IMO Haining was not at his best towards the end of the season.
For me, Michael Twiss had an enormous impact since joining us in 2004, and, at his best, would be in my team, playing centrally just behind the main striker.
I still agree with Glen that Thompson and Baker would be in the team, but a player who was not mentioned the other night and who I think played a major role in the promotion season was Neil Sorvel, and he would be in my midfield.
As I said, it is all about opinions........... :)

1) Joe Lewis
2) Andy Fensome
3) Lawrence Wilson
4) John Hardiker
5) Jim Bentley
6) Stewart Drummond
7) Garry Thompson
8) Craig Stanley
9) Danny Carlton
10) Michael Twiss
11) Carl Baker

12) Andy Parrish
13) Barry Roche
14) David Perkins
15) Gary Hunter
16) Mark Duffy
17) Wayne Curtis
18) Phil Jevons

I've taken this 'decade' as being season commencing August 2000 to season ending May 2010. For that reason, Justin Jackson sadly isn't eligible otherwise he'd be in ;)

No-one. It was a bit of fun.

Andy did jump on us when we mentioned loan players but was a bit more flexible with the 'ten years' - as long as they'd still been with the club sometime in 2000 it was okay.
