Good to see that we keep it in the family.

The one thing that makes our club so unique is that we do things totally different than others. No big names just recognition for a superb Chairman. Can't think of anything or anyone more fitting to honour the work of PMcG.

May i just say my own personal opinion on this....
i personally believe in some ways this must have been the most difficult decision ever for peter,,,he must have thought to himself what will people think my own father opening this new era/stadium of morecambe football club....well peter may i just say i think that no one should have more of a say on the matter or deserves it more,,,without you and your hard work and that not meant in any disrespect to other members of the board,,this club would not be where it is today,,,im sure there has been many other projects that over the years has taken your fancy but you have stayed loyal to mfc and the people of the town...
i personally remember first meeting peter in about 1990 whilst i was a mere shop lad at gibsons sports in lancaster peter in his capacity of md at reebok came to visit the shop...
he was a gent then and has remained the same till this very day....
i hope you will be proud to see your father open the new globe arena peter....enjoy and be proud because without you it would never have happened...

Both must be very proud for different reasons. This is big payback time for when Dad bought Peter his 1st subboteo set. These youngens always have to go bigger and better than the parents eh?

I'm more than ready to be shot here but....
Whilst his Dad is obviously a good man, and has clearly done lots of good for a huge number of people around Mansfield, other than Fathering "our" Peter, he isn't really relevant to us.
I would be extremely happy to see Peter McGuigan himself do it. I don't mean it disrespecfully but this is a fact. His Father has no connection with us, and in all probability this will be his only (or at best one of very few) visit to us.
That said, I fully agree that he will, and should, be given a reception fitting to the man who's son has done so very much for our club.

He attends "about half a dozen games" each season. Not too bad for an exile!

My personal preference would have been for someone with a closer connection to the club, perhaps the 'oldest season ticket holder' or something like that. Or the board of directors or Sammy. But, I'm delighted that we've not gone down the 'minor local celebrity', 'minor royal' or a 'football celebrity who needs a map to find Morecambe'. Jim Bowan? Princess Michael of Kent? Kenny Dalglish?

In this instance, I think that if PMG will be honoured by honouring his father, then that is good enough for me and it is a far better tribute than any of the more traditional choices.

So how did that work out then?

Not shooting you down, wijit, you make a reasonable point.
But I don't agree.
If PMG wants to give his dad the honour of cutting the ribbon that's fine by me. It'll be a proud moment for someone who, from what we've heard, is a great man in his own right and a thoroughly nice and community-spirited chap.

PMG has earned the right many times over to give his old man that honour.

I had a lump in my throat thinking about it (and thinking about any of us being in the position to bestow such an honour on our dads) and I'm sure Peter will when it happens.
We're a family club and the man who's done so much to bring success to us is keeping with that 'family' tradition.

Nice touch, I love the idea.
Is the glass half full or half empty? Mmmm? hard to say - but it does look like there's room for more beer!

Totally agree with most of the sentiments expressed. PMG has got this football club where it is today but over the last ten years he's kept out of the limelight, never wanting to be the club's figurehead. However over the last two years he's put his personal finances, time and effectively build and run a separate company to deliver the new stadium project. With such a commitment he fully deserves the right to let his Dad open the Arena (and to make one other decision which you'll hear about soon). Wouldn't we all love to be in that position to thank our Dad's so publicly?

Sorry Wijit, can't agree with you.

Whoever Mr McGuigan chose to open the new stadium was fine with me and probably the majority of Morecambe FC fans.

Lets's be honest without his dads guidance and encouragement our Chairman would
probably not be the man he is today a fitting tribute to Peter and all he has put into
our much loved club. Roll on the start of the season-counting the days to exercise
my lungs and catch up with friends :) :) :) :)

..and to have the Main Stand named in PMcG's honour would be a lasting and fitting tribute.

The main stand is being called the Peter McGuigan Stand.

I can see Wijit's point and appreciate what he is saying. For me though, the first game is more important than who cut's the red ribbon. The game will be remembered long in to history more than who ceremonially cut the ribbon.

Congratulations must go to Peter McGuigans dad though, a very proud day it will be for both father and son. Lets hope the sun's out, we have a full house and the following game is a memorable win for the Shrimps. :)

and just who does mean a lot to Morecambe FC fans?

I LOVE that such a personal tribute is being paid to a family member. We are a true family club and this gesture is spot on. I wish I could be there to join in the tribute.

Had to post on this thread just to move its position in topics.
Didn't like how the titles of how two separate threads were positioned.
