Hi there,
I don't post on here that much recently but have been a long time contributor on shrimpsvoices through its various guises, and regular reader of the site. I'd just like to say how proud I am to be a Morecambe fan right now.
We said goodbye to Christie in the best way possible (under the circumstances) tonight, and the attitude shown towards the team from the fans was truly unique.
I dont know what it is about being a Morecambe fan exactly but there is something about it that is brilliantly special.
Is it that we know where we are in relation to the footballing "giants" and there are no egos amongst the fans? Maybe. One things for sure, we don't go into any game with a superior attitude like some of the bigger teams seem to have. There's a great sense of humility that is sadly lacking throughout the modern game.
This last few days was the perfect example of this. A bigger team would have called for the head of the manager and all the players to be displayed on the gates of the town boundaries after the result we had on Sunday, but we, on the whole, took the result for what it was, a freak.
Tonight we showed the footballing world what football is all about and how football should be followed - with pride in your team through the good and bad. If you were to look at the scenes approaching the final whistle, you'd be hard pressed to know which team was winning and which team was going home disappointed. The enthusiasm and support of the team from the fans was absolutely amazing. I was proud to be part of that.
Morecambe is my club. I boast about them whenever I can to anyone who will listen. I've had a lot of stick over the last few days, particularly from those who know of my love for Morecambe.
The team were shocking on Sunday , but were strong enough mentally to turn it round and show the watching world something that we already knew - that this Morecambe side can play a bit. Tonight, I was proud to watch the team, trying desperately to show the world that Morecambe are not as rubbish as the previous result suggested.
Its been a vey emotional night. A win in the final match is a great send off to Christie Park. I had more than a tear in my eye during the final renditions of "We love you Morecambe".
I went there believing. I came away proud.
Proud of the team.
Proud of the fans.
Proud I was there!
Pround to be able to call myself a Morecame fan
I truly am, proud.
