Daggers gate?

Postby Christies Child » Sun Aug 24, 2008 9:08 am

I'll be suprised but very pleased if the gate exceeds 2000.

Daggers will not bring more than 150 and with only 2006 Shrimps fans v Rotherham I think we will be looking at one, if not the lowest of our home gates since joining the league.

I fear you could be right CC, but really, what do the public of Morecambe want? A football league club right on their doorstep and, ok, the season hasn't started as well as we'd hope, but if it is the case that we get a gate lower than 2000 or certainly much lower than 2500, which is usually the target, then questions will surely be asked in the boardroom. It is they who have put their money where their mouth is in terms of investment in the squad, the new stadium etc. So why then are people so fickle? If I were one of the board, I'd be thinking, ok then, if you're not really interested in league football, why should we continue to dig into our pockets when you can't be bothered to turn up?

If the apathy continues, there can only be one result...

So I would urge anyone thinking of not going next week because of recent results, don't be so shallow, support your team, support your town, get behind the lads, and cheer them to the first win of the season. Show the board that league football in Morecambe IS what we want.

on a brighter note, a lot of the soccer schools give the kids free tickets, when joined by a paying adult. Most of these are for the Daggers game so that might add a few to the gate, or am i just clutching at straws?

Common knowledge tells us that the better the results and performance a team put in the more fans will come and watch. Look at last season beating teams like Tranmere, Preston, Port Vale ( albeit on penalties ), Wolves and the players looked sharp and determined so the fans turned up in their numbers to see just how good we were playing but this season is a much different story, not the same performances or results as we may of hoped and that may show on Saturday. I hope not because the players need us as we are a club that prides ourselves on supporters so lets all try and make a special effort to get the game and maybe bring our singing voices too, then who knows maybe that will spur the lads on

Our opening game was slap bang at the peak of the holiday season.

Bit early for doom & gloom chaps.

I do think that there are one or two who enjoy a bit of a whispering campaign.

Be careful you dont fall into the trap of two seasons ago when we had a poor start. There were some then questioning the management team and the ability of individuals. Look what happened that season.

We should be building a statue of Sammy & Mark, not pulling them to bits. We are not a premiership side. We are not even a Championship side. We are an ex non league team who are punching well above their weight in regards to catchment demographics, quality and profile.

I still pinch myself sometimes when I think about how far we have come in 14 years.

Apathy Rules.

Or rather it would if it could be bothered.

Morecambe folk have always had an overdose of apathy.

The gates were always going to lower this season compared to last because of the new ground for away fans to visit.

Don't expect many from Dagenham to turn up, despite being up at the top of the league.
As I remember it last season they booked out a certain local hostelry only not to show at all.

Wasn't this fixture one of our lowest gates last season?

This will be my first league game of the season so expect a change in fortune ;)

I predict a romp for Morecambe :D

Welcome back Mick i sense now that our fortunes will change :D

Strangely enough we got 2754 v Dagenham in January, Brentford (2180) was the lowest in March as the interest dwindled. Even the home games against MK Dons, Peterbrough, Notts Co., Wrexham, Macclesfield and Wycombe were lower :o

None (League games) were under 2000 though

2754 against Dagenham actually and the lowest league attendance last season was the re-arranged night match[Who actually called it off game ?] Shrewsbury Town ATT: 1634 ; if memory serves me right it clashed with a big CL game as well L'Pool Vs Arsenal.

I can't see the Daggers match being too much over the 2000 mark to be honest. Apathy .. a poorish run of results and / or performance ... fair weather fans Who knows ; probably all contribute. It must be a bit of a headache for the 'board' .. and in future seasons they will undoubtely have to 'promote' home games much more. The word of mouth thing doesn't really bring many more in. I've been away myself for a week[ family hols] missed 2 matches , but the commencement of this season wasn't publicised a great deal .. I think more 'family promotions' , 'bring a friend' or perhaps something completely different will be needed to see gates approxiamating the 2k mark.

I THINK THE CLUB SEEMED TO BE DOING A BIT MORE PROMO STUFF LAST SEASON, IE POSTERS IN CHIPSHOPS AND PUBS, POSTER DOWNLOADS WHICH FANS COULD DISLAY ETC, THE FAMILY TICKET COULD BE PUSHED A BIT MORE THAT WAY.

THE SUMMER CAMP HAVE DISHED OUT TICKETS TO KIDS THAT ATTENDED, WHICH IS GREAT.

I THINK IF WE ALL PESTER OUR MATES THAT DO NOT GO ON A SATURDAY THE TEAM WOULD BE LIFTED BY A GOOD CROWD!

THE FAMILY TICKET DOES NOT HAVE TO ME MUM DAD AND 2 KIDS FROM THE SAME FAMILY UNIT.

MY BROTHER , MYSELF AND OUR RESPECTIVE CHILDREN CAN ALL GET IN FOR £25.00, WHICH IS EXCELLENT VALUE, SO COME ON, SPREAD THE WORD TO THE UNCONVINCED!!!

The club has done a bit I agree .. but to see consistently 2000 + crowds its going to have to be a lot more in my opinion. We'll probably see quite a few 1800 - 2000 crowds this season. How you get folk going to matches ? I don't know - price will have a lot to do with it and then when they do go do they feel its value for money ?

I don't know whether posters in pubs and chippy's is enough to swell the crowds.

What about an active junior fanclub thing - I know PNE have junior Lillywhites - getting kids in numbers down and having a pre-match get together ; a kick-about - junior shrimps. The family ticket is a good idea , but I think they should lower child admission prices ; I know from experience that kids spend or want to spend a lot when they get in at the food outlets [sweets , Pop etc.] and if they get to like going they'll keep going and tell their mates.

I have 4 of the little people and they would all like to go match day but 1] I couldn't afford it [ admission prices] and 2] They would drive me nuts and I'd hardly see a ball kicked.

This season I've invested in season tickets for me and the lad and £50 for him is excellent value - but if I talk to friends / neighbours/work colleagues about getting down to watch Morecambe - its usually price theyll ask about and although we are very competitive [pricewise] in the league - they think its a bit steep to watch Morecambe.

To attract 'new' fans it will take a major push - maybe discount vouchers in the local press or leaflet drops ? If you get 200 new faces at the following home game 30-50 might think of coming back ?

Calling for people to get themselves down to support the fans on here, is in my opinion, a complete waste of time.

You are only preaching to the converted.

Ideas of how to get more down, now that is productive.

Price ALWAYS raises its head, the fact is, although we are a football league side, we are still not seen as such. Neither by people nationally nor by local "floating" supporters.

The problem for the board is how to get the people through the gates paying their money, and returning. Without cutting their income. I'm sure there are also rules about how much can be charged by league sides.

It always helps if the side are playing attractive football, getting results is a big bonus.

This season always was going to be the toughest, in maintaining both crowds, and on pitch success.

This isn't to be taken as a negative post, but remember how many we took to Wembley? Now compare that to the very first game in the Football League and to the FA Cup game v Ipswich. The Wembley experience produced 'I'm a supporter for the day'....the Ipswich game 'I'm a supporter only for the bigger games' and then finally the first in the FL 'I'm a supporter today 'cause it's new'.

Since that day last August our gates have hovered around 2750 depending on the away support to be plus or minus. This season because we are no longer 'new kids' on the block the gates will certainly suffer due to transport costs and other relevant factors. But what of our home support?

Let's be honest for a change and say that we are not a footballing town. Unlike Barrow who have a vibrant economy due in part to the security of the shipyards, but also because of the huge investment put into their economy by industry and the commercial sector, people have money in their pockets. Money is something that a lot of Morecambe folk do not have. The reasons for that are lack of employment and the number of welfare cases in the town.

Whatever spare cash some people have, the vast majority will not spend it on 90 minutes at CP. They spend it on their families or themselves.

Gates will probably remain static on or around 2500 this season and unfortunately I can't see it changing despite the success that will be delivered on the field.

As I stated right at the very beginnig of this post, I don't want to appear negative, but I think we need to be realistic about gates this season and continue to support our team to the best of our ability.
