O/T Incredible achievement by our cyclists

Postby Christies Child » Sun Aug 17, 2008 12:40 pm

When you consider thet there is only ONE cycling track in the UK then their achievements are even more incredible. Could it be that all the money that they have as a result of lottery funding has been channeled into the right areas?

Absolutely incredible achievement. Just wish that our runners etc could perform to the same level.

Bit harsh there. We are having our best games for 100 years. The rowing alone has been worth the licence fee for me.

It makes yer proud! :D

Agree with CC, British cycling has been well funded and the money has been exceptionally well spent, we are the best in the world at track cycling and it is beginning to rub off on road racing, we have always been srtong re rowing (thats not to diminish their incredible achievements)

Just found this. Interesting approach and one that we should look at for 2012?

They broke it in the qualy round by over a second and made it look easy.

It just shows that if us British get the funding we can be good at anything could you just imagine if this country had the same sports facilities as they have in Oz. I think the Australians and USA have it easy with all the training facilities they have our athletes have to put so much time, effort and their own money into travelling hundreds of miles to their nearest training facility.

The dedication of our athletes is amazing.

Did you know that what Frank Lampard earns a week would pay for 2 british athletes for a year and there would be change left :o

Why do the BBC and others keep referring to "Team GB" !

I thought we are known as "Great Britain"

Its not "Team USA" or "Team Australia".

because it's the actual name! http://www.olympics.org.uk/beijing2008/

there was somebody in the guardian saying that before '92 there wasn't an official name as such, and that Team GB was chosen because it was easy to say and helped emphasise that the whole group of athletes (isn't it something like 200+) were a single unit.

They have done wonders to lift the spirits of this country in a time of doom and gloom and at last we can brag about sporting acheivement when we meet any Aussies!

Well we can until this time next year when the "Ashes"
are played.

Back to "Team GB" I have been listening to the announcements at the medal ceremonies and I haven't heard them say "Gold Medal Team GB" , it sounded like "Gold Medal Great Britain" to me.

An interesting discussion on Five live today, suggested that the other sports should look closely at their coaching methods and possibly use the cycling model where the coaches have not dictated how the riders should be coached but involved the cyclists into deciding what is best for the individual concerned to achieve their individual / team goal.

Maybe our footballing teams are over coached, not being allowed free expression.
