would fans instead splash out big on long term contracts and players on a promotion push(with no guarantees of that) ?
The crcumstances are a bit different Dawzi, we're building a stadium for different reasons than Preston. We need to improve our facilities to stay in the Football league (Christie does not meet all ground grading criteria, of which four accessible sides for viewing the match is one) and hopefully the new ground will make us much more viable going forward. Bit of a cheap pop at the nob end admittedly, I just find them an odd breed.
The point I'm making relates to expectations. What do Preston board and their supporters expect? Heyshem_mfc said that they should be aiming for the play-offs....why? 8 points off the play-offs and 7 off relegation at the moment with plenty of the season left. For me, an outsider who has no interest in Preston, I'd say that fairly realistic for them given the limitations they have (low crowds, willingness to let the best players go each year). Irvine has done a very decent job, what is he expected to achieve? Correct me if I'm wrong, but does Preston need to sell all the time? They seem well off as football clubs go, they've rebuilt deepdale (excellently btw) over the last decade so they can't be that skint. So why do they sell? From the outside it looks like a complete lack of ambition. I don't think they would need to go on a big shop with no guarantees of promotion to be successful, just keep what they already have for a bit longer.
Perhaps the rise of Blackpool has something to do with things?
