No More Cup Games at Christie Park

No More Cup Games at Christie Park

Postby Keith » Tue Nov 17, 2009 9:58 pm

So that was it, history was made, our last ever cup game at Christie Park.

There have been some crackers. Ipswich was obviously a high point, but Rotherham in the 70's and Hull were special too. Wycombe in the FA Trophy was brilliant, with Martin O'Niel in charge. Any other great home cup games?

Beating Burnley 2-1 in the 1968 Lancashire Senior Cup Final to become the first Non-League club to win the trophy. Burnley were an established Division 1 side then and put out a fairly strong side.

Remember Keith an NPL cup tie at home v Marine either late 80's or early 90's (not got Potted Shrimps to hand !!) but i think we were 0-3 down with about 10 or 15 minutes left and then beat them 4-3 !!!!

Marine must have hated Christie Park. That match ensured they STILL hadn't won here since the early 60's !!!

A cup game that sticks in my mind was the 8-0 v Esh Winning. FA Cup, 1986/87.

I'll never forget the cup games of the early 60's v York when a current club official and I cobbled together a banner saying 'Cock of the North'.......

OR the tie v Weymouth when I was lifted over the shoulders of my elders from the back of the cinder bank to the front.....No chance of that ever happening again..as they'd be in casualty

Memories of Cup Ties at CP....don't ya just luv 'em :?:

Morecambe V Carlisle
(Victor Gladwell) GLS Conference Cup
Highest ever crowd for a tie in any Conference only cup competition

Pretty random I know but I thought I'd throw it in.

FA Cup - Morecambe 6 Gainsborough Trinity 2

Four goals in three minutes. The fastest four goals in FA Cup history.

Three up and then they scored two in a minute. Wobbly knees lasted for about 18 seconds and within two minutes it was 5-2.

Topic not strictly correct as we are scheduled to have a Lancashire Senior Cup tie against Preston North End sometime (should have been tonight but has been postponed)

don't forget the "last EVER fa cup 2nd replay" a piece of historical trivia, but non-the less, an important event.

(still can't believe you lot scabbed a draw at the axe in the first game!!, then of course "rigged" the toss to decide the venue for the 2nd replay  ) but i'm not bitter about it

An early memory of mine was a cup game against Milnthorpe Corinthians. Did that really happen or have i imagined it?

My favourites would be - Congleton (about 1960 in something like the Lancashire Combination/Cheshire League cup) which was my first ever game at Chrisite Park. The 3rd round ties against Weymouth and Ipswich. Lancashire Senior cup final against Burnley and the Challenge Trophy 2nd leg against South Shields

We beat Sheffield FC 7-0 in the FA Cup in 1995 (our first season in the Conference). Could that be the one?

Well can't help you there then. My first visit was about 1967. Perhaps you're that confused that you're remembering half the Rossendale game?

one of the oddest cup games was played in front of about 150 people. We won 14-0 I think. Morecambe were playing a team from the North East because we'd won the Lancashire Junior Cup and they'd won the north eastern equivalent. But they were a standard a long way behind us. I think it would have been the biggest cup win.
