Alcohol, and binge drinking

Alcohol, and binge drinking

Postby Plain Peter » Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:00 pm

I'm sick to death of this subject, and the air-time it gets.
Back to basics, that's the solution.

Pubs opening hours: 1100-1430 and 1730-2300 (ditto weekends). That's 9 hours per day in total.
Nightclubs: Who needs them?
Supermarkets and off-licences: 1100-1800. 7 hours per day in which to stock-up.
Restaurants: Alcohol sold only with meals.

It's simple, so what is the problem?

I don't drink at all, but your plan is bananas. Tackle the people with the problems, let everyone else enjoy doing what they like.

The problem is the minority, don't see why you have to spoil everything for the majority.

Go the whole hog

Bring back
National Service,
The Birch,
Capital Punishment,
The Bobby on the beat (who is allowed to dish out thick ears)
Three channels only on TV (and outlaw repeats),
The B&W Minstrel Show

and get rid of all computers!

I can't remember when I last went into a supermarket between those hours, so I can't buy alcohol with my weekly shop, but binge-drinkers wouldn't think to go and get there box of alco-pops a bit earlier? Would you shut all the independent off-licences down completely?

Nightclubs: Who needs them? Well, people who go to nightclubs I guess? Can't remember when I last went to a night club but it happens occasionally, about as often as I go to MacDonalds, which then reminds me why I don't like MacDonalds... or nightclubs. Perhaps it's an age thing? What about casinos? I go to the casino about as often, it's like a 'grown-ups' nightclub, can I still have a drink in there?

Do you think binge drinking went up with all day opening? We had 24hr opening here on the Isle for many years before it came in over there. There was no noticeable difference in drinking.

I guess, in short, its not simple really, is it?

The problem with having all pubs closing at the same time is everybody pouring out onto the street at the same time and thats when all the trouble starts and the Police cant cope , and having restricted hours causes Binge drinking . People used to be clock watching and getting as much beer down their necks before the bell went for last orders and closing time .From a personal point of view its much better and more relaxed now . Think again Keith. ;)

Take away their 24 hour access to cheap booze.

So take the access away from people who can quite easily drink responsibly with no trouble at all?

Bollards. 1100-1430 and 1730-2300 is hardly taking away access to boozers.

It's losing them quite abit of business though? I'd love to see what Mick thinks of this?

As for supermarkets selling it until 6pm? Alot of people are still at work at that sort of time, your crazy.

You're sick to death of the subject so you choose to raise it yourself? Bit of a contradiction there Peter.

It's simple, so what is the problem?

Get the Mrs to buy your pop.
Let the binge drinkers buy their pop a bit earlier. And that's another thing, stop booze being a loss-leader in supermarkets, and take away the amount of choice.
Independent off-licences would probably benefit.

Good point. Nowt wrong with special licences issued under strict rules for certain establishments.

Get the Mrs to buy your pop.

Does your Mrs buy your pop or do you? In the last month how often have you bought booze outside the hours you suggest. Just another stupid thread from popped up Peter. Foe button pressed.

You really are living in the dark ages, i don't know if you know Keith personally, but some women do work aswell believe it or not, i know that is quite alot to take in, i'm sure you will get used to it.

Reading some of this even makes me happy to have Mr Brown in charge.

With respect, I suggest to you that there are more people now with an alcohol problem than there ever have been, and it's getting worse.

Harping back to old times?

I dont think you are part of the majority Peter. You seem to have a pretty relaxed lifestyle, Nice pension and work because you choose to or because you like to treat you and the missus to some nice weekends away (nowt wrong with that BTW). Maybe your lifestyle fits into those hours? Mine doesnt. I work long hours and regularly dont get home until after 7pm.

There is no way either myself or my wife could get to the supermarket in those hours without it being inconvenient (We both work and have four children). On the odd occasion I do go out (maybe once per month), I prefer to have a leisurely night out that is unrushed and enjoy the extended hours that the pubs offer, without having to go to a nightclub to carry on the evening. I dont do nightclubs anymore unless it is a special occasion, but used to enjoy them when I was younger (I even managed not to ever get into a fight or get arrested!). Both of my nephews use nightclubs and manage to stay out of trouble. I, and I suspect most people, have never been to a restaurant purely in order to get drunk, or without having a meal.

Your solution would have a negative effect and see the element you are trying to discourage binge drink upto 10.30 and then find somewhere else to drink (possibly in a public place unsupervised) afterwards with the cheap booze they got at 5.30.

Now if you said 'No daytime drinking' where people cant get tanked up all day on cheap happy hours and then roll home to hit the internet, I may agree with you! ;)

What about shutting the pubs all day until 8pm, not selling booze in Supermarkets until 7pm? That could have a positive effect and would fit in better with my lifestyle. 8-)

You say that you are sick of the subject. Why bring it up? :?

We've got Morrison's and Asda within 5 minutes walk from home, and I can nip into Asda near work as and when, but never had to.
Never had to buy it outside the hours I suggest.
