Although probably shorter still, going via A588 Glasson Dock, Pilling, Preesall, Hambleton will seem like an eternity. I would stick to A6/A586 if I were you.
You should'nt be so bad heading out of town at 8am but which ever way you come back at 5pm you will still have to crawl in from Scotforth but certainly better than the alternative of J34 and up through the town.
