As with last season - when Jim is not in the side there is no one to marshal the back line. No confidence to play football and the whole team fall back into our own half.

Jim might not be the best defender in world but he more than makes up for it with his leadership on the field. We're missing him and only hope he gets fit soon or we're in real trouble.

Agree the striking situation is also bad, but at least Wayne is still here. The smaller pacey strikers Sammy is looking at should play well off him.

seriously he should have running lessons, with his long legs he should be a hell of a lot faster

Ditto. I didn't want to upset everyone by saying it, but I'm glad someone shares my opinion. He is even slower than Jon Newby.

I don't think people are saying we will be, they are saying we clearly shouldn't.

Mark S wrote:Its pre season and about match fitness. The three games we have played do not in anyway represent what I think our squad or shape will look like come Aug 8th.

We have played trialists that have liitle or no hope in signing, we have injuries of first team players that will be back before August 8th ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) (in CC style!)

LIke I said in my post earlier, pre-season for me should be in 2 halves. First half about building up fitness, second about getting a team settled into a system.

Mark S wrote:Sammy also knows that the Preston and possibly Hereford's managers will be watching.

Great game of poker!

Mark, I don't believe Sammy would be daft enough to play one system all the way through pre-season only to begin the actual season with a different one, just to try and catch our early opponents out.

Don't get a striker, a fit defence and midfield and we're up a certain creak without a certain implement.

He can be as slow as he likes as long as he scores goals which he wasn't too bad at last season considering it was his first year as a pro.

Its not so long ago that certain people were posting on here that we would have the pick of any number of forwards as there contracts expired etc, doesnt appear to have worked out that way does it !!!!!!

I think if we can get a striker in even if only on loan but we need somebody who can score goals and knows where the back of the net is

Trust in Sammy! Dont panic! 8-)

How are they supposed to get fit when they are just passing the ball across the backline or backwards or when they pass it forward its a lob hoping somone can latch onto it, there was no movement off the ball at all in second half. Please could you inform us which first teamers will be fit for start of season as i understood that , Jimbo , Drummy and Wainwright who are important first teamers are long - term injuries . Also i havn't seen Wayno or Gazunter yet :?:

As for playing 4-4-2 and people saying we havn't got the player for that formation as we dont have the pace at the back , i have to disagree as i would have when fit are -

Moss Drummy Jimbo Wilson

Three players there with pace and who can pass the ball on the deck and a team leader who's presence and vocality are desperately missing.

As for playing the 5-3-2 formation to accommodate those players who have no pace , whilst it did prevent us from leaking so many soft goals it didnt inject much pace going forward as it should have . I cant recall many if at all any games last season playing in that formation , where we actually had the opposition on the back foot and scoring goals from open play as most came from set play.

Unfortunately I cant 'Inform' you of anything Dave. Strange choice of phrase there. Makes you sound angry.

I heard yesterday from a reasonable source that Drummy is a knock and will be playing next week. Jimbo has responded very well and is back in contention for season kick off (if not before) and Wainer also responding very well. Gary H a bit longer term and I dont know about Waynaldo.

Like I said, I just heard, not gospel but it certainly cheered me up yesterday. Contrary to popular opinion I dont wear the rose tinted specs all the time, but I do like to wear them as much as possible. I like to think positive thoughts and enjoy the football. Once it becomes all consuming you are on the road to the funny farm! :?

I just dont understand people getting all wound up over a non competitive match with a patched up side that doesnt look anything like it will come the start of the season, against much stronger and higher placed opposition. But hey, each to their own! :D

Defo not angry Mark , just curious as i thought you might have some inside information about injuries , i heard that Drummy had a problem with his elbow and would be out for a while :?:

As for people getting wound up, i think it was pure frustration at the lack of idea where to pass the ball after watching a much better performance against better opposition on Tuesday , which gave some people a bit of optomism for the coming season . ;)

In the last 20 minutes it looked more like 8 - space - 2. A.P. was the biggest sideways culprit but in all honesty there was nowhere for him to pass to. He tried a long punt up the left wing 3 times to no avail so reverted to giving it back to big Dave.

All credit to Huddersfield to show us what life in League 1 could be like. If Preston and Hereford are watching us we have certainly lulled them into (hopefully) a false sense of security

I'm sure the lads will be in tune for Tuesday at Kendal - We don't want a repeat of last years episode do we

p.s. I see CC has bumped up the original thread which will send shockwaves through SV's

I've got to say I've got no idea what all the moaning and groaning is about. We learnt a lot from the Huddersfield game.

Andy Parrish. For a while now we've been trying to work out who his run reminds us of. The first one was a llama, quickly followed by Bambi. Good as these two suggestions were they just didn't quite capture the essence of the player and the running style. We knew out there was the 'holy grail' answer an object, animal or person who was a virtual double for la Parrish. Then Freez kindly released that pent up frustration, that tip of the tongue angst at knowing but not if you know what I mean. And when he said it we were all like that's it, spot on and why didn't it come to me. When you think about it it's easy to see. Oh yes, Freez's answer... Bernie Clifton's ostrich.

Aaaron Taylor. This is my view. I've wondered whether he can he do anything except score goals? Answer - No. Hold ball up - no. Run fast - no. Tackle - no. Break up play - no. Track back - errrr... no. Play intricate pass - Ye... err no. Good goalscorer though.

Chadwick? 848848.

I was reading the 1960 Bumper Book of Sport this morning. On a page headed goalscorers it said something along the lines of 'getting goals is what matters most, its what gets people through the turnstiles, its what gets people excited and it the people who bag goals that matter most'.

No disrespect but I couldn't give a monkeys whether we sign Mark Hudson, however good he is, we've got a wealth of midfielders. To get punters throught turnstiles we need strikers and however big his ego was we could really do with a couple of Rene Howe's.

I agree with posh about the striker even if we got sdomeone like Rene Howe on loan for the season and then they left there are some good players at united but like people have said Sammy has never gone back to them to get a player on loan

I've just been trawling through the available strikers throughout the North West/East + Midlands/Wales and it is frightening considering the overall number of other positions. To put it bluntley, we are up the creek unless we get a good loan or two! Although against the majority I still think Jamie Forrester must be worth a trial at least (although time is running out), and that is if he is willing to trial with us. He's a proven goal scorer, although knocking on a bit now but might just have 12mths left in him at this level?
