Surley this has to be a day out on the train
although do trains ever run at weekends now?
I just checked out the National Rail timetable site for a random Saturday in August (They dont have details for November). You can get a train from Lancaster at 10.57 that gets into Crewe at 11.59 (just in time for the pubs to open. 17.09 or 18.09 to get back, however these are the summer timings and no stoping at Preston.
Mick, and everyone,
The full rail timetable which runs until 12th December (downloadable from
http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/3828.aspx), shows direct trains to Crewe on that date at....
Lancaster dep. 09:57, Crewe arr. 10:59;
Lancaster dep. 10:57, Crewe arr. 11:59 (up until, and including, this one appear to go via the main line through Warrington as normal);
Lancaster dep. 11:59, Crewe arr. 13:54 (obviously diverted via Manchester or somewhere, taking an extra hour)
and returning at....
Crewe dep. 17:47, Lancaster arr. 19:49 (the only post-match through train, again diverted via a longer route);
then these two, but you have to change at Manchester Piccadilly....
Crewe dep. 18:11, Man. Pic. arr. 18:49, dep. 19:16, Lancaster arr. 20:18;
Crewe dep. 19:11, Man. Pic. arr. 19:49, dep. 20:16, Lancaster arr. 21:18;
so that 17:47 would have to be the one to catch, really.
