The photo is a bit harsh so I'll take it off my profile. I don't want anyone thinking I might support the MBIs

Oh FFS, if only people read the thread then I wouldn't be accused of repeating myself.

The MBIs were elected on the promise of supporting the bypass.

The MBIs all voted against the bypass.

They didn't just vote against it, they spoke against it at the public enquiry, at which an independent inspector decided they were wrong. But I don't suppose in the current climate of the speaker of the house falling on his sword and MP's claiming for items that cost more than many people (especially pensioners) earn in a year, that anyone will be taking much notice of the MBI Party record.

The Morecambe Bay Independents are hear to stay-Like it or not. This is a party with no scalingtons in the cupboard and have never claimed an expense that is deemed in appropriate. All the Candidates are family people thus attracting the avearge Morecambe voters. We need elected representatives who can relate to the people of Morecambe not ones that spend time campaigning for sexy reforms.
I hear on the grapevine that a former Labour Councillor now Independent is in talks with a member of the Independent Party about coming and joining the M.B.I group. I hear he does not think we are as bad as he previously thought we were. Keep up the good work Mr Walker with friends of Regent Park--You are welcome to join us Mr Robinson--another foothold into Harbour Ward.

There is plans in the pipeline for a feasibility study into looking at bringing back the illuminations
once the Town Council is established by the Morecambe Bay Independent Party members.
Keep up the stirling work Evelyn and I suggest bloggers join the new Facebook Group once I set it up

Hmmmm.

As I recall Geoff Wilson the former Morecambe Bay Independent councillor for Westgate attended the minimum number of council meetings just one per six months in his last year (any less and he would have thrown off the council). However he did claim the full allowance for a councillor thus getting the equivalent of over £1,000 per meeting he attended.

In Heysham Central the electorate voted in a new Morecambe Bay Independent Councillor, Shirley Reid. Her response to being elected was never to attend a single council meeting (its unknown whether she was paid but I can only assume so) and was thrown off the council.

I'm sure others will remind us of other scandals such as pornography downloaded by an MBI councillor on to a council-owned computer; and the lies to the District Auditor made by an MBI councillor to discredit another local politician. I've omitted a much worse one because I can't remember the full details.

We also need people that deliver what they promise. The MBIs have proved they can't do that.

It's also good to see an MBI supporter completely ignoring the facts I have put forward, can we assume they are all correct?

Hey there's nothing like arrogance. Voters may as well not turn up at the elections if it's a done deal.

How much will a feasibility study cost local taxpayers to prove illuminations will cost the same taxpayers a fortune and still be second best to Blackpool?

NO!NO!NO!
We are the main Political Party in Morecambe -like it or lump it.
Once we elect a full slate onto the Town Council we will be able to deliver effectively for the town. As I am aware thier are plans in place to introduce a new scheme that will see Morecambe having its own illuminations once again. There is also plans in place in the long term I have tom say to open an open air swimming pool, I believe it is being talked about by prominent M.B.I Councillors. These indeals is why I support The Morecambe Bay Independent Party apart from which they are the only party that consult with older people within our town.
I would like to take this opportunity to praise the older peoples Champion in the Council -no other than Coun John Barnes.

Illuminations? Open air swimming pool? Proof that the MBIs have no concept of reality, are stuck in the 1950s and clearly have no knowledge of the climate of the area they feel themselves most suited to represent. The area doesn't need an open air swimming pool. Splash Park is more than adequate for the kids. There's no point trying to compete with Blackpool when it comes to illuminations because it's a battle that could never be won (and would be stupidly expensive). If that's the vision the MBIs have for the future of Morecambe, I'm glad I won't be there to witness the total destruction.

So the MBI's want to have illuminations to attract people to the town but don't want to build a road to bring them in to the town?

Do the MBI's really think that Blackpool is the type of town that Morecambe should aspire to be? I'm sure there are many business people in Blackpool who are making a lot of money but it is also one of the most deprived towns in the north west. Walk a couple of blocks in-land from the prom and it is extremely deprived.

So, the 'bucket & spade' tourists? Clearly the MBI's still haven't discovered this web site. If people who were young enough to remember the 1950's & 60's and want to recreate their youth (aka consult with older people within our town) then surely they should do it on their own dollar rather than increasing everyone else's tax bill?

How will an open air swimming pool and illuminations have a real impact upon unemployment in Morecambe?

How will a new parish council have a positive impact on anything beyond an extra layer of bureaucracy?

Will Geraldine Smith resign the whip and stand at the next election as an MBI?

Now,now Brian, no need to abbreviate(or swear!).
You have mentioned ONE promise. I thought by reading this thread(which i have!) there was
a stack...or, pile...or a sprinkling...or a whole host of lies that have been told.

Don't get me wrong. I am not an MBI supporter or an Archer admirer. I am just trying to understand local politics, and deciding if a Town council is a good idea. I have a vote.

To be honest I don't remember the MBI ever putting out a manifesto. At the 1999 elections they won with a negative campaign of just slagging off Labour over Blobby. In 2007 their leaflets really didn't tell much except they were local and cared about Morecambe more than anything else.

So let's assume their core policy is:

Improving Morecambe as a tourist resort

From 1999-2003:

- They shut down the world music festival while in power
- They backed and approved plans for an ALDI on Morecambe prom on a key site for tourist regeneration
- They failed to invest in new festivals, infrastructure or anything tourist related

From 2003-07

- They opposed the only sustainable and cost-effective bypass route to Morecambe thus blocking improved access to the town for tourists
- They consistently opposed plans by the Lab-LD-Green coalition that actually led to Morecambe's rejuvenation

From 2007 to now

- They've saved The Dome. Well its hardly an improvement. The impact is over £200K to be covered by local taxpayers, which has been funded by cutting playground maintenance, children's holiday activities, swimming pool closures and cuts in grant to Citzens Advice Bureaux
- Put forward a 'business plan' for The Winter Gardens that is highly dependent on public money not just to get the work done but cover its running costs, which is lamentable, nit just in the current climate but at any time.

I would urge any MBI member or supporter to provide one major success in improving Morecambe as a tourist destination since 1999. They've had six years in power and four as the largest party in Morecambe so come on then...

Having had the privilege of meeting a number of local elected representatives at local level, I am aware of how dedicated the Morecambe Bay Independent party are in archiving thier objective of having full control of Morecambe both at Parish Council Level and City Council Level. The value of Independent representation on The City Council eneables non-party politics to be practised in The Town Hall--thuse getting things done for our lovely town.
The Morecambe Bay Independent Party are a group pf well meaning people with the love of the area at the bottom of thier heart. It is encouraging to know that our M.P is on our side also.
The Morecambe Bay Independents will work hard on the Town Council to
Make you Streets Safer--They have already done that with P.C.S.O
Make sure your back streets are cleaned
Make the Town Look inviting to visitors by investing in flower beds.
As a retired person I want to be able to enjoy my autumn days in a town that has a dedicated and dynamic team to look after the wellfare of my area. I am confident that Evelyn Archer and her team will do just that.

We're all aware of their intentions but that's the problem. Lots of nice ideas but do FA about them. The MBIs are solely responsible for havnog PCSOs? Even Goddess Archer wouldn't claim that one

The rest of their ideas, why can't they be done sat on lancaster city council? I want to be told what they are going to do different that can't be done right now.

At the end of the day, as far as I'm concerned, having 3 tiers of LOCAL government is just ridiculous and wholly unnecessary. The good people of Morecambe now have Lancashire County Council, Lancaster City Council and Morecambe Parish Council. Lancaster City Council tried desperately to obtain unitary status (something which I believe the government were wrong to deny them). At the same time, the MBIs somehow managed to convince the Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government (I assume) that granting a parish council for Morecambe was a good idea. The simple fact is, it isn't. It's a pointless waste of money and I urge the residents of Morecambe to seek out and vote for candidates standing on a platform of abolition.

Sorry but you're wrong.

The money for PCSO's was found by Ian Barker, the then Labour Leader of Lancaster City Council, who worked really hard to ensure budgets weren't cut elsewhere to keep PCSO services. Originally they were council wardens and the budget was withdrawn. The interim managers of the Town Council (no elected councillors involved) have had to cough up £44K from the Town Council budget for PCSOs because of the role of a parish council. £44K I know the MBI weren't expecting to cover. Wonder what they'll cut to pay for it?

Jumping Jack Flash38 wrote:Make the Town Look inviting to visitors by investing in flower beds.

Sorry but you're wrong (part 2). The budget for flower beds was cut by the MBI coalition in this round of cuts. In many places beds are being grassed over to save money. Check your local paper for details.

Hi mate it's Darren. There isn't a manifesto or one single issue that those calling themselves "residents first" stand for, we have coalesed around that banner as a group of people with a similar outlook who don't believe that the parish council is the place to get party political. We've been accused of all being labour activists, which is wildly innacurate. We're all local people with a range of national political views and experience, local business people, people with jobs like nursing, some retired and yes some politicians( one candidate I haven't ever met so how that makes her a labour activist is beyond me). Everyone who knows me knows my politics, but as a group we want to make sure that the parish council isn't used as a talking shop that siphons your money off into pet projects that don't add value to the town, and I mean all of it not just poulton, at the end of the day we're all paying more than eough tax, yet the MBI's said this was going to cost us nothing. I for one, and I speak only for myself would abolish any organisation that costs people more without delivering anything extra, but we've got this thing for at least two years and I'm not just going to leave it to the likes of archer and her cronies, the self styled champions of morecambe who have done nothing but campaign to pickle the town in aspic. It's time we stopped harping on about morecambe's past and did something for its future. If elected at the first meeting of the organisation when we choose the mayor/chair I will be voting for the ABBA candidate (anybody but archer). That's policy number one.PM me if you need any more.
