Retained list

Retained list

Postby Bristol Shrimp » Sun May 01, 2022 11:05 am

Yesterday is just starting to sink in, was quite comfortable in the end just didn't feel like it at the time. Any idea how long until a retained list is announced? Keen to see Leigh, Wilding, McLoughlin, Gnahoua etc sign up for next season and beyond!

DA has a difficult few days ahead but that's what all managers at this stage of a season face. The next few months are the most hectic for any manager and DA will be well aware of what we need to build a squad capable of holding its own in another season of exciting EFL1 football backed by the magnificent support of the BoD and fans.

We've all got our own wish lists, so for me we need to find more midfield dynamism that can provide Cole (assuming he stays) with more support. Defensively we need a strong central partnership without doubt.

I'd like to think that both Obeka and Ayunga will get more game time especially Ayunga who looks a totally different player under DA. More direct and less of the tricks over recent weeks. Obeka can provide options up front as we can't rely on Cole repeating this seasons superb return.

The coming retained list may include a number of shocks. With question marks over O'Connor despite a 2 year deal and McDonald. Maybe Tooms has seen his time with us come to an end as his appearances under DA have been limited.

DA will do what is necessary my only wish for next season is that we play a more pressing game up top than of late.....but what the hell do I know about tactics.....NOTHING I hear from the masses.

As is his usual way, DA was not prepared to comment on next season or his plans when asked by Quinny post match....much prefer that withdrawn approach than come out with making promises that circumstances could prove groundless.

To be fair to Tooms, I think his appearances under Derek have been limited simply because Fane has been playing well and doesn't deserve to be dropped. Tooms can still do a job for us, although he may be limited to coming off the bench more than a regular starter, especially if we can get Fane to stay.

Really enjoyed listening to Dereks speech last night. He got a wild reception and when commending the efforts of everyone involved during the full season. He mentioned Robinson who got a resounding Booo!
Derek has clearly seen that the grass isn't always greener, stating the people at our Club look out for each other and work as a team including the fans and it doesn't matter if you have 2500 or 25000 ticket holders, it's more about having the right ones.

Aaron even said he thought we were gone with 7 games left

A very interesting closed season ahead

Whatever happens in the summer the team that starts next season will be totally different to the one that finished the game against Sunderland yesterday

Looking at our current squad list my wish list would be:

Retain:

GK - Adam Smith
GK - A. Da Silva Mendes

LB - Greg Leigh
LB - Liam Gibson
LB - Connor Pye

RB - Ryan McLaughlin
RB - Ryan Cooney

CB - Rhys Bennett

CM - Toumani Diagouraga
CM - Aaron Wildig
CM - Ousmane Fane
CM - Shane McLoughlin

W - Dylan Connolly
W - Jonah Ayunga
W - Arthur Gnahoua
W - Freddie Price

S - Cole Stockton

Loan players we should look to keep:

GK - Trevor Carson
CB - Jacob Bedeau
CM - Adam Phillips

Contracted players we should look to move on:

CB - O'Connor
W - Wes McDonald
S - Jon Obika

Could be a bit harsh on O'Connor because I do like the guy but impossible to ignore the fact he has been the heart of our defence that has conceded 88 goals this season. We've improved massively defensively with him out of the team and I think it would be a safe assumption that him and Obika could be 2 of our highest paid and those funds could be better allocated.

Duffus and Delaney both out on loan, no strong feelings towards either of these staying or going. Let Derek have a look at them over the summer.

I wouldn't be too gutted to see Leigh go if i am honest. I just don't think he has done enough despite having obvious qualities. I would choose Gibbo every time over Gregg.

So you’d keep most of the players who struggled at L1 level
Not sure which of those are still contracted but Wes, AoC,Arthur,Ryan Mc,Jonah, Adam could be released as they don’t look L1 players
Adam is on loan so that solves that one

I won't argue that the team as a whole obviously struggled over the season but I think we had a number of players who performed fine on an individual level. Full backs and midfielders were all generally fine but I wouldn't lose any sleep if any of the players you mentioned leave. Considering we actually paid a transfer fee for Jonah might go in his favour in terms of staying though.

The players we signed/loaned in January were all pretty good too so keeping any of them next season would be a positive in my view.

Ultimately I've got full faith in Derek.

Also I thought Fane was on a six month deal but maybe he had an option of an extra year?

Didn't realise FANE had a contract for next season

Out of 10 contracted players who have been told to find another club i would personally keep Ayunga, Cooney and Shane ...all the others I would let go

Bit shocked about Bennett as I thought he had done OK but that's the life of football

Big re build for next season like it always is but I'm sure Derek as players in mind to bring in

I've been shot down in flames several times this season for suggesting that O'connor wasn't good enough for league one football, but that was my early opinion of the player and it never changed. I would never fault him for his effort or commitment but it was no coincidence that when he lost his place in the team we looked a lot tighter when defending. As for a retained list, I would be happy keeping the team that has started the recent games, which means releasing several players who are obviously not in Derek's plans. Finally, what a season, I've enjoyed every kick and every header and I'm already drawing up a list of the away games I want to attend next season.

Surprised that Cooney & Bennett aren't considered up to standard.

DA has recognized that our defense has not been good enough and has acted accordingly.

Will be a new back line with only Gibbo as a recognized full back.

Would like to have seen Ayunga and Obeka to stay but DA knows what he needs so we have to support him. We can't have another season like the past one. Mid table has to be our goal....

Hope we can get Carson as he has been a big part of our survival.

Bit surprised that Connor Pye could be on his way but that's life.

Tooms could sign for Harrogate...being his home town.

Time waits for no man and Toums is no different. A class act and pure joy to watch. He took us away from the Tranmere and Bury cast offs we were used to and showed us how a proper midfielder should play. He is a club Legend, utter class.

Cooney looked so unfit towards the end of the season and really struggled to kick on. Sad to see as I thought he was going to a top player for us.

Bennett is a shock. I thought he had Derek Adams written all over him.

Chuffed to bits to be wrong about Aaron,.hope he pens that new deal.

Derek is ruthless and we need to trust the process again!

DA is ruthless but it's what we need to become more difficult to beat. We have to trust him as his record shows he has the contacts to bring in his type of player.

Ayunga showed on Saturday why he isn't up to League 1 standards. He still does those step overs and chops that don't work and had that horrible air kick. His work rate is suspect and he backed out of a 60/40 in his favour.

Although it looks like we are losing some quality, we don't know who adams has lined up. Some of the contacted players won't find alternatives and might get another chance and one or two players returning to their parent clubs might end up back. Interesting times

Particularly sad to see Toums go. What a footballer and how privileged we have been to witness his talent. Sad to see this season time catching up with him. I am sure he will still be able to do a good job in League 2 and I wish him well for next season. Many of the departures are players signed in a panic by SR and it is perhaps a reflection of his judgement that some of them were nowhere near League 1 standard. I suspect his dodgy judgement will be a feature at St Mirren and lead to his downfall there.
