The ‘Run-in’

Re: Five Cup Finals... But Not Just For Us.

Great performance v Scunthorpe. But results elsewhere going very much for us too. Barrow doing us a huge favour by beating Exeter, Carlisle & Newport drawing & Walsall beating Tranmere. Salford's defeat by Bolton is bitter-sweet. We need them to drop points to give us a chance of catching them. They are away at Grimsby on Saturday, but then have Carlisle, us & Exeter as their following three games.

Newport: Four points behind us with a game in hand
Forest Green: Four points behind us with a game in hand
Exeter: Six points behind us with a game in hand
Carlisle: Seven points behind us with a game in hand
Salford: Eight points behind us with a game in hand.

I've got:

Cheltenham
Bolton
Cambridge
Morecambe
Bradford
Forest Green
Tranmere
Exeter
Carlisle

Away at Tranmere in the first leg of the play-offs?
What do you reckon?

Last 5 matches

Postby Redalert1970 » Wed Apr 14, 2021 7:35 am

Oldham (h) draw
Grimsby (a) win
Bolton (h) loss
Walsall (a) draw
Bradford (h) draw

That would give us 72 points... Will that be enough let's wait and see

What do others think

I think you are being a bit pessimistic Redalert. 72 points would not reach DA's target. I think we could win 3 draw 2. 77 points....more than enough for play off spot. I think I might be being a bit optimistic

Was just going to say. Every game is a realistic win other than Bolton. By the time we play Walsall, they will be safe. And Bradford may have nothing to play for.

Three wins would seal the play-offs I think - would require the chasing pack to get at least five wins out of six remaining fixtures. Two wins could well do it though given the recent form of other teams looking for the play-offs!

I think automatics would require us being pretty much impeccable and those above us making some slip ups.

Playing how we did yesterday, even the Bolton game is winnable. Playing how we did on Saturday, even the Grimsby game isn't a 'given'.

The really positive thing is, Derek Adams has been here before, so he knows how to manage the players. By our own standards, we had a couple of 'off games' against Southend & Port Vale, but we bounced back in style. Keep up the way we played yesterday and we could win any, even all, of our remaining five matches.

I agree Keith all our remaining games are winnable for sure, it would require our very best performance in every game. Oddly the game I'm most worried about is Grimsby, we know from experience just how much they will be scrapping for points especially at home. I think 3 wins will secure us playoffs, if we can have 5 exceptional games in a row then that could well be automatics.

Not sure how accurate his calculations are but my son in law reckons if we can get 7 pints from the next 3 games we can guarantee a play off place.

I reckon if we hit the play offs, some may celebrate with 7 pints or more. Hit automatics and it could be 7 barrels.....!

On this sort of topic, I recall someone posting a link to a site that has all the permutations for our league, i.e. the lowest/highest position we can finish given every result goes a certain way etc... - does anyone have that link?

Apart from pride. Put the Shrimps in their position, a win against at least a play-off contender itself is sometimes as big at the end of the season if nothing else.

Oldham are one of the highest goal scorers in the division but also one of the worst goals against records.

Should make for a free scoring game or one that will not live in the memory as both teams could cancel the other one out..... :?: :?: :?:

Four Cup Finals!

Automatic promotion is now in our own hands. Four wins from four and we go up no matter what anyone else does.

But, as we've seen today, Grimsby suddenly believe that they can stay up, so they will really be battling now.

Crawley (3-1 W)
Carlisle (3-1 W)
Forest Green (2-2 D)
Newport (1-3 L)
Harrogate (0-1 W)
Cheltenham (1-0 W)
Cambridge (2-1 L)
Southend (1-1 D)
Port Vale (1-0 L)
Scunthorpe (4-1 W)
Oldham (4-3 W)

There’s a pattern emerging! 2 wins, 2 non-wins, 2 wins, 3 non-wins, 2 wins... hopefully not 4 without a win!

Final 4:
Grimsby
Bolton
Walsall
Bradford

Has anyone else spent far too long studying the remaining fixtures???

Bolton potentially have some problems. Carlisle tonight, us on Saturday then Exeter & Crawley. Potentially, Crawley could still be in with a chance of play-offs by the time that final fixture comes along. Four games against sides that all really need to beat them.

All four of our games are massive, but hopefully, by the time we play Bradford & Walsall, their seasons will be over. Sometimes that can be dangerous, but it is generally preferable to playing sides who really need points to go up or stay up! And it isn't beyond imagination that Bradford win their next three games and are still in with a shout of the play-offs themselves by the time we meet.

There are definitely a few twists & turns in this season yet, with some really interesting fixtures tonight...

Bolton v Carlisle [Carlisle win please]
Bradford v Tranmere [Bradford win please]
Forest Green v Exeter [Exeter win or draw please]
Leyton Orient v Cambridge [Orient win please]
Newport v Crawley [Crawley win please]
Stevenage v Cheltenham [Stevenage win please]
Walsall v Salford [Don't care too much, although, Walsall win & we win, then Salford can't catch us]

Wonder how many the gods of football will deliver? As long as we get three points, any of the above will be a bonus!
