Reminisce

I think Arnold scored 8 against Rossendale - season 67-68, last season in Lancashire Combination. Didn't we also beat a decent Chorley side 7-1 that season?

The Challenge trophy final at Wembley, I was living and working in London at that time and mosied along to Wembley with a work colleague who supported Crystal Palace. He loved it. I remember Morecambe Corporation open topped buses in the car park at Wembley and imagined fans travelling down on the open deck. Did that happen or has my imagination gone into overdrive?

Best goals for me were the two that Twissy scored at Cambridge - both worldies. Also loved Kev's late volley at Exeter a couple of seasons ago. And Thommo's late winner in the FA cup in the rain at Chesterfield, right in front of us.

Memorable players include Bob Baldwin, Derek Varcoe, Ken Waterhouse (as player manager), and that 67-68 forward line, Adriano Rigoglioso and that chant, Brian Healey, JJ, stormin Norman, Drummy, Kev and Dave McKearney.

Other fond memories - FA cup matches at Bedlington, Harrogate Railway, Bromsgrove and Oxford (Two of those in torrential rain). Going on a 52 seater Battersby Silver Grey coach to watch a combination match at Bacup with just 4 of us on board. Hitching back from Bangor City as a teenager, after an FA cup win 1969? and getting picked up by the team coach with Charlie Lea knocking on the window and beckoning us, smiling, to get on board and sitting next to Jonny Martin and his very glamourous girlfriend (well she seemed glamourous at the time)

With regards to the York FA cup game I remember changing ends at half time with both sets of fans going through a tunnel, in opposite directions, under the main stand. I don’t recall any trouble when that happened. Didn’t we have a replay at Christie Park and a second replay at Maine Road? I’m sure that some stathead can sort me out. I know that York had seen enough of Holding and kicked him all round the park at Maine Road. Did Arnie Timmins score 8 against Rossendale? Lance Millard, the keeper, was a complete character. I remember a game at Guinness Exports when he spent most of the time talking to the crowd. There was a famous picture, in the Visitor, of Steve Porter lunging in to score the winner at Bangor

Hyde United, on their plastic pitch. They were bloody low to be fair and it didn't make much difference if he was watching aircraft or the ball! Only player ever who got lower when he jumped!

What about Dave Gardner? You knew when his mates Beckham & Giggs were sat at the back of the stand with scarfs around their faces, watching, because he could beat every player on the pitch and score a great goal. Unfortunately, if they weren't there, he barely broke sweat. Incredibly skilful when he could be arsed. Which was about twice. Married a Holyoaks actress, whose dad was a billionaire. The git.

So how did that work out then?
