Stimo's on ya

No one ever seems to mention Barry Stimson in these 'Best Team' threads.

I remember him fondly from watching Morecambe when I first lived in the area (when at Uni around the 86-87 season?). He got sent off in the first match I saw and always scared the whatsits out of opposition forwards with his 'Stimo's on ya' bellow! However I also seem to remember him scoring direct from a corner (left footed in swinger from North Stand end) so he can't JUST have been a meathead - tho' imagine a back 4 containing him, Jimbo and Artell!

Would be interested if anyone can throw a more educated light on his qualities (or lack of) over a longer period than the one season.

Was it JH who signed him from Gateshead?

If so, surely it was later than the 86/87 season?

I was at Uni 85-88. Lived in Morecambe in 2nd year (86-87) and went watching the Shrimps that season with a Bury fan and Scarborogh fan! I'm fairly certain about the year - tho' it was a long time and alot of beer ago.....

Stimmo was signed by Joe Woj. in 1986 for what was a club record £2,000 ish fee.

He defected to Colne a couple of years later for a then record sale fee of around £8,000.

A season later than everyone else buggered off with Joe to Colne. Stimo was our only decent player who was on a contract, so everyone else just left for free.

But they are probably the same people who never forgave John Norman for going to Hednesford 'on a Bosman' even after he returned to us. The board at the time either couldn't afford to give contracts to players or chose not to so they could off load them whenever they wanted to. It bit us on the arse when all the players we wanted to keep left, but they were offered practically double the wages we were paying and the security of a contract. I'm sure I know what I would have done in those circumstances... and I didn't blame Joe at all. I'll always remember him fondly as being the manager who restored some pride to the club after a decade or more of abject failure. I'd also say that Griff laid the foundations for Jim to build upon (with Leighton James laying some foundations of his own...)

I seem to recall that our previous Commercial Manager was influential in bringing Griff to the club....or so it's been claimed.

Larry Milligan took over from Joe and Eric Whalley also had a go.

Billy Wright (Everton not the Wolves great) also had a go before Bryan Griffiths.

Bryan Griffiths signed most of the players who won us promotion to the Conference such as "The Famous 5" and Big Jim McLuskie.

I think it is fair to say we were turning the corner under Griff who brought in the core of the successful team that Jim developed. The good times started to return under Bryan Griffiths, who arguably doesn't get the credit he deserves. I can't remember why he left?

Had to leave due to pressure from his employers who told him that it was either them or MFC.

There is another '24 hour' manager, who did get a game in as I recall... still at the club!

Our own Mr Edge is who I was thinking about. I think he managed one match, I'm guessing between Leighton James going & Jim being appointed but it may have been earlier than that?
