You're technically incorrect as St George's Day is actually on a variety of different days as St. George is the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, and Russia, as well as the cities of Amersfoort, Beirut, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg, Genoa, Ljubljana, Gozo, Pomorie, Qormi, Lod and Moscow as well as a wide range of professions, organisations and disease sufferers.

So pretty much any day is St George's Day and I'll happily celebrate George-the-Palestinian-bloke-who-never-set-foot-in-England-once-day on any day you wish.

What are we supposed anyway? I thought we could also dress up in national costume, shell-suits, trainers, etc; drink lager until we threw up; moan like hell about foreigners, and the demise of English traditions that we can't actually be bothered to do ourselves; and then go home and cheer ourselves up watching Eastenders.

There's a great pic of Henry and Barry on Facebook in traditional costume, photographed by a "legend". Not sure if I'd be allowed to post it on here though! ;)

Personally, I believe Bede to be far more deserving of the position 'enjoyed' by St. George in England. Spent his whole life here and is practically the only historical source we have from the so-called Dark Ages.
Some are dead and some are living. In my life, I've loved them all.

And St Patrick had anything to do with Ireland - sometimes the anti English stuff is annoying.

My point is English folk have some day to celebrate their Englishness unlike just getting pissed because it's Paddy's Day (and most have never stepped foot in Ireland)

St Patrick did actually spend sometime in Ireland. As a result, and because he's unique, they've always made the most of their saints' day. The fact that Guinness hijacked St Paddy's Day to spread it all around the world and clean up a small fortune is the real reason. We're suckers for a good party and a bit of over-blown commercialisation. The fact that the English haven't made anything of St George's Day is the English's fault (or a well-known beer company who could copy the Guinness model).

P.S. Here is St Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland (my first ever Photoshop creation).

However your comment about us English not doing anything to celebrate is to a degree the fault of looney left councils who berate anyone from flying English flags (In England), incase we upset ethnic minorities. (Although at times I feel like one myself in this country)

Loony left councils? Wake up it's 2009 and not 1983.

It's an urban myth anyway. We live in the UK and so council's fly the national flag - the Union Jack. The rest of it was dreamt up by the Daily Mail to appeal the right-wing pensioners and racists who love that kind of stuff.

But I think the tide is turning and hopefully one day our beleagured leaders of this country WILL make the day possibly a Bank Holiday or something.

Who wants a Bank Holiday in April? Move St George's Day to July and you might get a few takers.

BTW - My wife who is WELSH informed me to check up on St Patts nationality and here is what I found.

When he was about 16 he was captured by Irish raiders and taken from his native Wales as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After entering the Church, he later returned to Ireland as a missionary in the north and west of the island, but little is known about the places where he worked and no link can be made between Patrick and any church.

My wife is actually half Welsh and half Irish (hence her temper!!!!) but like me on April 23rd will be celebrating St George's Day.

Well all I did was offer a refreshing Guinness - even I drank one at Cheltenham last week  The Guinness "stand" was the biggest at the races and
they did'nt serve Carling or John Smiths :( Great craic though.

Don't worry I will be celebrating St. George's Day with English Roast Beef, Pudding from Yarkshire and peas from Birds Eye. Might have to swill it all down with lager from South Africa though!
