So you gotta let me know........

Postby RedRedWine1 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 2:05 pm

Should I stay or should I go.

It appears common knowledge that a number of players are out of contract come the end of the season (anybody know the exact list?). Simply put, who do you you think is playing for a new deal, who do you think has done enough to warrant a new contract, and who do you think (if any) might be moved on by the management to possibly free up space to attract new players?

..as will Curtis and I think Yates, Adams, Artell, Howard and Drummy?

Hunter I think got a 2 year deal as did Wainwright and Parrish along with Roach.

Twissy only signed a new deal late last season and Jimbo ealier this season.

O'Carroll, Blinkhorn, Parrish and Edge should all be shown the door no question.

Curtis and Howard may end up going as well depending on whether we can get good quality replacements otherwise they should be able to do a decent job as squad players.

I don't think there's any chance of Howe staying, he will want too much money and there will be bigger clubs willing to pay him it.

Danny Adams is an interesting one. I think his days of playing left back in a back four are finished at this level so his future may well depend on what system we are planning to play next season.

We should be looking to replace Artell, McLachlan and possibly Twiss and Wainwright in our starting eleven and moving them to the subs bench. I'm still not entirely convinved on Wainwright. 3 or 4 good games recently doesn't make up for the 5 months of crap previously but if he carries on as he has been doing for the rest of the season then he should be in the first team.

So, in summary, I would say if we go back to 442 next season we would need something along the lines of:

--------------------------- Roche -----------------------------

Yates ------ Bentley ------ McStay / New Player ---- New Player

New Player (Duffy?) --- Stanley ---- Drummond ----- Wainwright

---------------- New Player ------- New Player / Taylor --------

I think Taylor is the best talent we've had through the youth ranks arguably since Thommo came through and in his 8 starts this season he's scored 4 goals so he's hardly out of his depth at this level. He's only going to get better by playing games and hopefully he will improve enough to see us make some money out of him like Carl.

Sort of..... :D

But I notice the topic is sort of being discussed on a number of other threads. The subject is quite interesting and possibly deserved a thread of its own. It is not meant to slag any of the players off, just to gage opinion of what the make-up of our squad may look like come August. I'm of the opinion that we have more players with deals up at the end of the summer, than those that still have deals left to run (granted I can't be 100% sure about that).

I was under the impression that most of the squad that we had at the start of our first season were either signed on, or had deals extended for a period of two seasons. Unless the club have been handing out new deals and not telling everyone (highly possible) then I'd assume a large proportion of the current squad might be out of contract in the summer.

All just my humble opinion...

O'Carroll - Jury still out but Sammy doesnt like him so I think will be released.
Blinkhorn - IMO should be released. Works hard so Sammy likes him - he'll probably be given a contract despite the fact that he doesnt actually score many or have much skill (and gets injured all the time (ok, cheap shot)). But yeah, only back up at best and we have plenty of strikers.
Parrish - Makes a decent full back IMO. Need to see more of him though. Should go if we need room on wage bill.
Edge - Surplus to requirements. Released.
Howe - I don't think he's staying here unfortunately but Sammy should still make an effort.
Curtis - Could still serve as a squad player next season. 1 year contract.
Adams - No pace but still does everything else perfectly so 1 year contract for him.
Yates - Has been playing for another contract and fully deserves one IMO. 2 year contract perhaps.
Artell - 1 year contract. For now, he's good enough for back up with few defenders at the club.
Howard - depends what he's like coming back from injury.
Drummond - 1 year contract then take it from there.

I'd agree with pretty much all of James' assessments. I would like to see O'Carroll given a decent run but as you say, it would appear unlikely unless a few more attackers get injured :?

There will be a lot of coming and going and much depends on who we can bring in.

Two who impressed me in the Chester line-up on Saturday were Lawrence Wilson and, again, Ryan Lowe.

I think Lowe could be a lot better in a more confident side, he holds the ball well and brings others into play as well as having an eye for goal himself.

If we have any hope of keeping Rene I think they'd play well together, with Twissy, Aaron and Wayne as back-up (all of whom I'd keep for now unless we're planning a major clear-out with a whole new raft of better players coming in).

In Chester's situation I think Lowe and Wilson would both be available.

Wilson usually looks like a good wingback when I've seen him and would give us more good options on the left, perhaps with Duffy in front of him.

Wainer has done really well over the past few weeks but we need options if he has a dip in form, which we've seen this season.

Just seen your post "red knight" stunned that you either want Mcstay or a new player in. Mcstay has been fantastic for us and my contender for player of the season.

While Adams, Artell and Bentley lack the pace and movement Mcstay comes in with little praise and sweeps up in front of roachy whenever one of them gets court out.

For me Mcstay is our best defender!!!!

Am I right in thinking a certain Wembley hero is out of contract at Carlisle come the end of this season?

When DC left us after the promotion season I've got to be honest and say that I was not really all that bothered, despite 'that' goal I thought he had a pretty poor season and I personally couldn't see him progressing much further. Blinkhorn had looked like a more complete player in his brief stint with us and I became content that if we could get Matty as replacement we'd have done a good piece of business.

However, I believe that Danny showed a great deal of improvement when he came on loan to us over the Christmas period this season. IMO the most disappointing aspect of being handed a transfer embargo was not being able to extent Dannys period with us. His all-round game seems to have developed greatly since he left us. I hope that if Carlisle doesn't offer him a new deal we can step in and bring him back. I think both Darlo and Bury will be after his signature also, which could complicate things if either of them get promotion this season.

A point worth thinking about indeed!

If, as i expect, players leave who are out of contract that would indicate no transfer fee, just a reduced wage bill - for the time being.

Clearly i feel we need another striker, an out and out winger on both sides; good performances from Neil in one month doesn't constitute a season; a centre half - mcstay is good but needs someone better alongside him and imo Bentley and/ or Artell do not fit the bill.

Midfield needs work, i'd seriously look at off-loading Hunter and Maclachlan...too lightweight - terrific players no question, just not good enough for us. Drummy has been a fantastic servant to this club but he will be 34 in November and so i don't see him lasting any longer than christie park.

Howe, i would love to buy...or loan...or be given to us free!

Twiss has gradually started to win back some pre-injury form and Taylor looks promising. I wouldn't say he's the "finished article", but the more games he gets the better he will become.

Blinks, injury prone and not good enough.

O'Carrol...what a disappointment, given his pedigree i expected more.

Yates in an interesting one, he for me was the best player in the first half of the promotion campaign but faded away towards the end, played utter tripe in the early part of last season and ended up at Burton for a loan spell...came back a la Curtis and has been exceptional, like Adams has in this new found format we have adopted.

Young Davies might go too.

Howard should go now, its a shame as he is a good player but with Adams signing up for a further yr, we can get a better left-back than Howard and use Adams as cover.

All in all we don't need a major shake-up but will we have the funds to buy any players, pay wages etc...?

I think we're on a salvation excersise for 3-4 yrs whilst we move grounds as the transfer funds are just not going to be there.

I think the comments about Dermy O'Carroll are a bit unfair. He hasn't had a start since early in the season. He's scored one belting goal against Barnet and on Saturday played two sublime passes. In my view I'd put him ahead of Betty Blinks on the basis of that alone. Clearly Sammy doesn't rate him and he looks like a cheeky schoolboy when he plays but I like him.

I'd like to see him get a few starts just to see what he can do when playing alongside Rene Howe. No point in giving up on him just yet.

As for the rest. I'll reserve judgement until we've got nothing left to play for or the season has ended.

Agree with everything Posh has said.

For me and I have to say that even Blackpool supporters who I work with reckon that he's not FL standard and there has to be a serious question mark against the lads injury problems that have blighted his career both with us and at 'pool.

I'll always be grateful for his goals whilst on loan but we can't retain a player purely on a sentimental basis.

Personally I rate O'Carroll far more highly than Jon Newby, who seemed to be a hero amongst many on this board.

Shockingly underused, seems to have one of the best footballing brains at the club

I'm another who doesn't feel that O'Carroll has had a fair crack of the whip. It may be due to others misfortune but he can't be far off a start surely? Ten minutes every once in a while will never be enough for him to shine.

Totally agree.

How can the lad impress if he isn't given a decent run in the team or at least more than a 10 minute bit part.

Unfortunately Sammy has had a reluctance to try youth throughout his FL career and when he has done it's only been for short spells. There comes a time when youth have to be given an extended chance ie Taylor. Excellent scoring ratio for the number of starts.

The 10/11 season is when we'll be making major changes ie once our wage budget is expanded. Until then, I'd prefer to work with a squad that might not be the best but gels well. So I don't think huge changes will be made but we'll definitely be seeing a few changes I think.

For me, Wilson of Chester was impressive. He stood out as really wanting to win the match and his run and goal was something. If Chester get relegated, he may well be tempted by a nearby league side such as ourselves.

I also think we have a good shot at bringing Carlton in permanently for next season. He would make a good long term prospect being quite young and gives us that bit of pace we need.

Then if we bring in Duffy and also maybe a good creative central midfielder on loan, we should have a decent enough squad to get us through next season. Not a perfect squad but bearing in mind our limited resources, it should be enough.

If you speak to all those attached to mfc's academy, i think you will find that it happens to be Taylor's strongest asset. According to many academy sources, Taylor's strength is in and around the 6 yard box and not 25 yards out.

The lad has talent and is certainly one for the future.

It's called been in the right place at the right time which is the art of been a 20 goal a season man. Our other strikers Blinkorn, Howe even Danny Carlton etc when they don't get the service drop deep or out to the sides to find it and we end up with noone in the box when we get an attack.
Taylor just seems to stay in and around the box and wait for the ball to come. (I watched him score a hatrick for the reserves a few weeks back when he was always in the box when the ball came in).

He is looking like the type of player that could become a 20 goal a season man.

Most of Gary Linekers goals were tap ins.
