Holding Role

Holding Role

Postby sandgrown » Thu Feb 12, 2009 5:18 pm

with the terrible loss of Stanley and Fraser, do we have anyone who can play in that holding role in front of the back four ?

with the players we have it's a vital role in our set up.

as soon as Fraser went off on tuesday they went up the middle to score, with a shot from the edge of the box.

I guees Chester can't wait for saturday now !

I'm not sure we do. it's a job Fraser does pretty well.

I think Stewart Drummond could do the job, but with Stanley also out he'll be needed more as the creative player. That would leave Gary Hunter or possibly Wayne Curtis and I'm not sure how effective either would be.

McCann would have been ideal, but it looks like SM will play Hunter

but for me, id play Drummond holding the midfield with Twiss as playmaker then two Strikers Blinkhorn & O'Carrol with Wainwright & Curtis as wingers

oh and the back four picks itself

imo...

..............Twiss......O'Carroll.............
Curtis..Drummond..Hunter..Wainwright
Adams.....Bentley.....Artell........Yates
.....................Roche......................

Not a strong (fast) defence so we need to look to score a few.

In theory I'd potentially agree with that, but it's owing to the static defence we went to a 5 at the back anyway.

I'd put Drummy in front of the back 4 and maybe have a 5 1 3 1 so:

....................... Roche ......................

........Artell.........Bentley.........Adams

Yates .......................................Wainwright

.....................Drummond.......................

......Curtis..........Hunter...............Twiss

.......................O'Carroll ............................

Using this system, Twiss and Curtis can alternate supporting O'Carroll, who I think holds the ball up well, but either Curtis or Twiss can also support. You could also have Curtis right up top switching with O'Carroll. Whether you'd swap Blinks or Aaron for O'Carroll is another matter as O'Carroll seems to have mixed reviews by both the manager and fans. I think with the 4 forward players there, there's a potential for creation, whilst at the same time, Curtis, Hunter and Drummond all work hard defensively too.

Sounds as though Rene will not be risked, according to Sammy on tonights Sports News on Radio Lancashire.

For what it's worth even Sammy doesn't understad the embargo especially after having permission to sign Duffy by the league.

I would not risk Rene in this game because i think it will be physical with probably a couple of red cards.

Yeah, Chester seem to be a very physical (dirty) team. When we played them at their place, they made tons of fouls on us. Plus they have like the second most yellow cards accumulatd this season or something like that. Sammy said Howe will probably be in the line up for Rochdale but not saturdays game.
