Anyone like to tell me where this 'Yarkshire' thing comes from? I was born in Yorkshire, of Yorkshire stock for several previous generations, I lived there for the first 37 years of my life, and never heard (or read) anyone say 'Yarkshire' till I started reading Shrimpsvoices. Just wondering like...

I too have family from Yorkshire (my mum is from Pudsey originally and I still have family there) and I do a lot of work over in Dewsbury / Thornhill / Huddersfield area.

I've got relatives in Ossett. Now why they have 2 teams in Ossett Albion and Ossett Town each with gates of about 150 when if they joined together and had one team and probably gates of 300 ish I do not understand.

At Headingley when there's a big match on they are all chanting "Yarkshire , Yarkshire , Yarkshire" !!

Same with Harrogate Town and Harrogate Railway FC too.

I recall Bradford City fans chanting the "Yarkshire, Yarkshire" thingy too !!

Guiseley used to chant it inbetween chants of "Guiseley, Guiseley, Guiseley".

Ilkley, Otley, Batley, Frickley, the chant is endless!!

Given the places mentioned - Pudsey (I lived for 11 years in Farsley, just down the road), Headingley (been there, I was born in Leeds), Ilkley (most of my child- and early adulthood was spent in the Ilkley area, including virtually all my schooling), Otley (one parent and two grandparents from Otley) - I can only assume it's down to what people hear, not what is said. Your upbringing and the environment around you influence how you interpret what people with different accents actually say, hence the mostly inappropriate use of t' to signify a Northern (or at least Yarkshire) 'the', when in reality it would be more appropriate to use just the apostrophe, since it is almost entirely voiceless (or silent, if you prefer), being probably a little less than a glottal stop (just ask Jeremy Clarkson, who did a treatise on this in the Sunday Times a few weeks ago).

Now I've given everyone a few linguistic and grammatical points to consider, I'll crawl back in me box (or barrel, maybe, since cooperage lies somewhere back in my family tree, but then so does carpentry, both older and more recently).

I totally missed their first goal, just as York took their corner a Eurofighter Typhoon fighter flew over the ground; must have been off putting for the players.... Parrish was claiming handball.

Their second was a rocket, and worthy of winning any game.... I was right behind it... Peach.

Overall I think we got what we deserved, but if we'd have capitalised on a very slow start from York it could have been a totally different game. Great goal from Mullin, finishing off a great breakaway move... But it wasn't our only chance. Walking away from the ground last night a couple of York fans commented that they were lucky not to be 3 down. Good to see us finally having a goal scoring threat from corners and set pieces.
