O/T Walking time

O/T Walking time

Postby Robert Jackson » Fri Apr 15, 2011 6:24 pm

Opinions please. I am a reasonably brisk walker. If I was at the Millennium Bridge at about 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, would I be likely to reach Morecambe station in time for the 4:19 p.m. train to Leeds, and does the old railway path end close to Morecambe station?

I know the train picks up in Lancaster in any case; I'm just thinking about a bit of exercise!

If you go down the cycle track it comes out right next to the train station, just outside Frankie and Bennys, 1 hour 19 minutes is plenty of time IMO.

You could always aim for Bare Lane Station instead.

Boring walk once you lose sight of the Lune (imo), plus there's potentially all sorts of human obstacles in the way.
Why not have a brisk walk down the Quay to Williamsons and back. Finish off by clambering up and over Castle Hill to the station?

Am I the only one who'd stroll up to the Sun, have a pint, then wander up to Lancaster station? 8-)

So how did that work out then?

Even getting across Millennium Bridge can be challenging :)

With 75 minutes to get to Castle Station there's time for a short 'crawl', 4 pints easily achievable:

Carpenters
Nags
John O'Gaunt
Merchants

Not quite.
The Three Mariners was originally The Carpenters Arms :)

I'm not sure which one of us should be more embarrassed by that. ;)

Three best ever pubs in Lancaster, in no particular order:

Slip Inn, when it had the bier keller in the cellar;
Lancastrian, the one on Upper Penny Street;
Blue Anchor, when it was just a small pub with all the RN cap tallies littering the bar.

Can think of several more great watering holes, but that'll be more than three!

Sorry for going O/T :oops:

Thanks guys for the replies. In actual fact, it turned out that - for my return journey - Lancaster station was plagued by replacement buses in every direction, so it was a bus to Carnforth and then the train back to Leeds.

I like the pub suggestions but am not too bothered about drinking on my own. On my previous visit with a mate, we started off in the John O'Gaunt, moved on to the Horse and Farrier and then the Borough in Dalton Square. After dinner, we tried a pub whose name I've forgotten somewhere near the Duke's and then finished off at the Three Mariners. Love the Coniston Bitter there when it's on. As I'm knocking on a bit I clearly remember it being called the Carpenters Arms; suspect it maybe changed its name in the 1980s. When I lived in the area I liked the Golden Ball, but believe now that it may be closed, and then when it was last open it only sold keg beer. A chap called Fred Jackson had it for years and years; anyone else remember him?
