On paper these sound like two good signings.

Holdsworth is a right-back/right-midfielder who could play wingback.

Hurst has attracted a total of £300,000 in his last two transfers and can play left wing or anywhere else across the middle or up front.

Both have had injury problems in the past and have then found it difficult to break back into a regular place in teams doing okay in the league above ours (so no disgrace there).

Both have plenty of good experience at a higher level than ours and, I would hope, are eager and hungry to get their careers back on track.

If they are now clear of any ongoing injury issues and do well here, let's hope we can do a Jevons and sign them both permanently.

Welcome - and good luck to them.

Yes welcome. Good to see the Huddersfield and Scunthorpe connections still alive. 8-)

Has Kevan got a brother called Geoff by any chance, he might get a few minutes up front

Kevan Hurst sounds like a decent signing, as you say Shrimper decent enough to warrant big money moves.

Not sure we need another defender though, 9 defenders at the club now, 10 if you include Garry Hunter and 11 if you include Niall Cowperthwaite. I also believe Holdsworth has only played 15 games in 18 months.

11 league goals between 4 strikers (13 with 5 including Shuker) are where the problems lie in my opinion.

Our management team obviously see our main problems in midfield and providing the ammunition for our strikers to do their jobs.

Can't argue with their assessment, although a proven goalscorer would be nice!

Found out about the Holdsworth deal from an Oldham fan at work yesterday, apparently it just hasn't worked out for him at the Latics and he hasn't really been given much of a shout. It will be interesting to see how sharp he is given he has played so few games during his time there.

Hurst could be a good loan signing, although Carlisle fans do mention a lack of pace which is something that we are crying out for. Still, a player with plenty of pedigree and should be another good addition to the squad.

As Shrimper says, hopefully the pair of them are eager to make a point and prove their worth. Lillis mentioned that getting a couple of fresh faces in might lift the spirits, and with the games starting to come thick and fast we'll need as many fit players available as possible.

Agree with Duffman, we could do with another Striker. Mullin is way off the pace and Hendrie is best used as an impact sub.

possibly although i like McCready he's not that faster then Jim Bentley if at all maybe just about the same for pace ?

so Sammy might put the dependable Parrish who's our fastest defender back in central defence now theres a specialist right-back about

Really interesting right up about Kevan Hurst. He 'could' be a very good addition.

Good news truly.

The suggestion that Holdsworth can do wing back means you COULD have the back four as now Parrish McCready Charnock and Capaldi, with a midfield four in front of Holdsworth Stanley Drummond Wilson, and Jevons and Spencer up front. Jimmy had started to click when he went and showed his inexperience, getting himself sent off. Hopefully he has learned from that. Better service from the centre of the park should mean we can put a few more away, and also that the defence will be covered better, instead of finding the ball coming back at them so quickly.

MY view is that players like Fleming Hendrie and Shuker are best as players you can put on for a vigourous last 20 minutes to change things when they go wrong - as they are bound to from time to time (though hopefully LESS often than up to now). That will be the case for both Fleming and Hendrie until they put on a bit of muscle and gain a bit more experience of this level.

My contacts at Wrexham tell me they always viewed Fleming that way - a very good prospect but a bit of a way to go yet.

A warm welcome to both players, hopefully this will give us a good run in to the end of the season. As with all new signings only time will tell, having read the information available on both players it will be interesting to see where Sammy fits them into the team as they don't appear to specialise in one position.

Neither would appear to be a straightforward replacement for Duffy, the question is who is going to be left out, certainly makes for a more interesting game against Macclesfield.

to be honest you pick some of this best teams on here for a young lad

i would go with that but a diamond shape midfield playing Stanley with his work rate just covering and Hurst using his attacking talents helping feed the front two

Hurst is a wide man. Why does everybody have him playing in the middle. This signing must mean we will not be playing with wing-backs tomorrow, but wingers, i would guess that anyway.

Sign a striker that is a handfull on and off the ball and doesnt just tap in goals and we are ready to roll. Cant see it now though. 3 days left and we have a very big squad.

For me tomorrow it would be 4-4-1-1. With a midfield of Rundle, Stanners, Fleming and Hurst with Shuker tucked behind Jevons or Mullin in a free role. Cant see it though.

To be fair i have just read that. Maybe Hurst could start tomorrow in a central role, however i really do think Sammy has signed him as a winger.

From the views of those who have seen him it would appear that Hurst has the ball skills but not the pace and feeling is he's better in a central position where his skill could cause problems.

Holdsworth appears to have been injury prone and has only played 15 games during the last 2 seasons. Again others feel that he's better in CM than at RB.

Tomorrow we'll find out about both I presume.

Hang on. Why have we signed a left winger when it's right wing that is the problem area?
