He was in Hiroshima on a business trip on 6 August 1945 when the city was zapped to bits by an atomic bomb.
He suffered serious burns and spent a night in Hiroshima before returning to his home city of Nagasaki just before it was bombed on 9 August.
So his serious burns wounds were dressed in the local hospital outpatients unit. He then spent a peaceful couple of nights in the only local hotel left standing. The following day he took a cab through the unusually quiet streets to Hiroshima train station, which by an act of god had been spared from any damage by the atomic bomb. And despite widespread devastation, a complete breakdown in communication and infrastructure, the 1015 Nagasaki Express was able to leave on time!
Seems a bit of a myth to me.
