Brisbane Flooded off to lend a hand. o/t

Postby Aspers » Tue Jan 11, 2011 6:24 am

Australia's 3rd largest city slowly going underwater.
Heading North tomorrow night to Coffs Harbour (6 hours from Sydney).
Will be in Queensland by Sunday. May not get to Coffs in 1 go as the Pacific Highway is expected to flood near Port Macquarrie (Manning River).
Hope to be back in Sydney in 2 weeks.
Been told to take drills, hammers, saws, screwdrivers etc.
I'm sure I'll be a big help, I've got a certificate to teach ballet. 8-)
I will of course be giving you all a day by day account of what's going on whether you want it or not.
Anyone got any loved ones need checking on? PM here and I'll see what I can do.
Having a quiet 1 at home tonight.
Summer eh! Warm as buggery but wet as a hookers clout after a Saturday night.

There's a news channel here dedicated to it.
I would go up earlier but no point as you can't do anything when the waters on its way in, leave that to the Army.
Its the cleaning up afterwards which is hardest.
10 people confirmed dead today including 4 children.
Bugger.

Thanks Ezz,
Just had a call from a friend up there, her suburb is underwater and the power company are having to start outages tomorrow morning from 7.00am.
I have friends who have opened their dance studios as temporary refuge shelters.
If the Brisbane river peaks at 5.5metres as its expected to then the whole of the CBD will be underwater.
1 of the dams holding back water from South East Queensland is at 150% capacity and they are going to have to start dumping water from it into the Brisbane River or it will breech.
Rain and showers forecast for the East Coast for the next 2 days with torrential rain in Melbourne and flood warnings issued there.
Just had a quick look outside to see if I could see 4 guys on horses!.

What a weird country, either burn, get washed away, or play cricket.
Good luck, take care.

Looks like they're planning on evacuating.
Could you imagine if that happened in Birmingham or London? We can barely handle half an inch of snow!
Get over it ;)

Take care of yourself Wayne, be careful not to become part of the problem. Probably best taking a van load of beans & soup then setting up in your friend's dance studio to get some food in to people.

So how did that work out then?

A Disaster Relief Advice Centre is now up and running on the Isle of Man, a remote island in the Irish Sea

I'm sure you'll have danced Swan Lake, so that will help...

*This joke was actually brought to you by my wife! she was asking why Aspers wasn't in the chatroom. I said he'd either be drunk and in bed or fishing survivors out of the floods

We've got relatives in Beachmere, north of Brisbane on Deception Bay, any idea what it's like up there?

Deception bay appears to be OK. No serious news out of there. The weather has been hot ans sunny for the last 4 days.
Just cracking a few tinnies, forgot about the time change on the border. Its an hour eaelier than it should be!
I'lll probably be away for a week, will catch up soon as.

Thats me just got back to Sydney.
Every time a work team started cleaning up a poilitician came and had a photo    no one could get any work done.

Great response from the Aussies.
Met loads of good blokes and sheilas who were helping out.
$20 Billion they reckon the cost to clean it up., I told Julia I'd do it for $19 Billion.
20 dead (so far, could rise to 29) which is the tragedy.

BZ.
The way the people of Queensland, and their neighbours, have taken it on the chin, rolled up their sleeves and got on with it is terrific.

what made me laugh is there was one town in Queensland totally evacuated apart the camera crew in a boat who could hear this generator going and then said it must be from that house built higher up than the rest

then said somebody must still be in there so they sailed over and shouted HELLO IS THERE ANYBODY THERE so then this Aussie bloke came out and said Gi-Day said am ok ave stocked up and got the generator going to keep the beer cold absolute quality!!

I saw that too.
1 of the most important things in this hot country is to keep the beer cold.
The colder the better. 8-)
