FAO USA Spanish question o/tre Iker

Postby Aspers » Wed Jul 07, 2010 9:01 pm

As the boards foremost expert on things Iberian could you please settle the following contretemps.
Bruce from next door reckons you pronounce Ike casillas name as casiyas.
I reckon its its casilyas ( obviously this is not correct spelling but phonetics thingy).
A 6 pack of Tasmanias finest awaits your verdict.
BTW he has agreed to abide by your decision
He reckons Casilyas is a balearic/ regional accent thing and the general term is Casiyas.
Much love and Spain were quite brilliant tonight.
Cost me a few bob but whatever.

You lose.
Is the glass half full or half empty? Mmmm? hard to say - but it does look like there's room for more beer!

Unless you're Welsh, in which case it's pronounced "CCCCCCHHHHLLLLLLLSSCCHHLLL" (someone get me a towel!)

Just got back from town after watching the game and I'm afraid you do indeed lose, Waynito.

Ka-see-yass would be the phonetic pronunciation as other posters have pointed out. In standard Spanish the double L makes a sound like an English Y as in Yes. Different regional and national accents sometimes turn it into a more guttural cross between a Y and a soft J, (like the J in Benjamin) but 'proper' Spanish Spanish is what we are going with here and there is nothing I know that gives it the L in there that you have.

Iker is in fact a Basque first name (it means 'boy') but his last name is very Spanish. There is no Basque equivalent of the double L as far as I know so I'm going with the Spanish pronunciation, but just because I speak Spanish I do not have any authority with Basque. The two languages are in no way related.

I'll take one of those beers from Bruce (really, Bruce ? - what's his wife's name, Sheila?!) as my consulting fee, thank you very much 8-)

Iker Casillas is neither Balearic or Basque. He was born in Madrid, and has been playing for Real since he was 7!!!. That's what I call a youth policy.
USA Shrimp is correct with the pronunciation of Ka-see-yass.
Hope he has a great game tonight and keeps that prat Roben from scoring.

Her name is Barbie, Iker won them the world cup and I still insist everyone is wrong except me.
In New York at the moment, Saw GaGa the other night ( ;) for mods).
She gave me a big hug.
Bit of handbags in Times Sq. NYPD being a bit spoilsporty and pulling down Spanish flags.
Everyone bood them, that'll show them.
