I haven't lived in the area for a long while and will be arriving at Promenade station on Saturday morning.

Could someone give me walking directions please how to get from there to the start of the old railway line that used to run past Scale Hall station and on to Lancaster?

(Where's Scale Hall station, I hear younger readers asking)!

simple mate

You will get off the train and see a frankie and bennies, next to it is a cycle track, this cycle track used to be the railway track to lancaster, walk along it for around 2.5 miles following signs to lancaster and you will arrive at your destination.

It's still there! I walked past yesterday and the platform edge brackets clearly protrude from the grass banking which was dumped on top! :geek:

No, but I used to chuck it down my neck in the Number 12 Club, on Parliament Street on the current Curry's site.

Nope, they put Sainsbury's on the site of Green Ayre loco and goods sheds. Green Ayre station was situated between Greyhound Bridge and Skerton Bridge, alongside Parliament Street on what is now a green area again! :geek:

....and it was housed in the old loco shed, funnily enough!

The electric trains would slowly weave and descend down from Castle Station, stop at Green Ayre station The driver would then change ends and the train proceeded over Greyhound Bridge and along the Lune to Scale Hall.

wasn't there a station just the Morecambe side of Greyhound Bridge?

I don't recall the line ever working but the infrastructure still being there, so when did it close?

Yes, Scale Hall station was (and, as I say, the remains still are) adjacent to Scale Hall corner. http://glostransporthistory.visit-gloucestershire.co.uk/electrif.htm seems to be the most informative website available, and there is a photo of Scale Hall station amongst http://leswood.powweb.com/Railway_Encyclopedia/Part156/Part04/index.html
EDIT: and.... http://leswood.powweb.com/Railway_Encyclopedia/Part156/Part01/index.html

The old Scale Hall station was eventually dismantled and transferred to Woodhill Lane cricket ground and it was the pavilion prior to the new building.

Aye run by the great Geoff Woodhead (think that was his name). Scooped up a load of young tearaways from all over Lancaster and Morecambe and gave them a place they could hang out in safety and have a bit of fun without bothering anyone.
Organised all sorts of events and activities for them and helped them deal with some of the issues they had.

Constantly mithered by busy-bodies and clueless old councillors who didn't want to support somewhere where 'oooh, they let some of the kids smoke!!' :o

Some nice pics there John, took me back a bit looking at old Bare Lane station.
I grew up next to it, spent ages looking at trains and seeing if anyone wanted their bags
carrying on my go-kart for 10p.
