part of an e-mail I sent to my boss in the wee hours...
I’m sitting here, checking e-mails etc and I can hear ‘something’ moving… I knew everyone is in bed and I worked 5 years of night duty when I was still a nurse, before I became a manager and stopped having to work for a living, so I can judge what is normal building noises AND THIS WASN’T NORMAL…
I listened intently, trying to place it… I could tell it wasn’t human and then…
it was gone!
Silence once more… Now I’m not easily spooked but this was odd…
another noise… then a piece of paper rustling…
I’m beginning to look for something substantial to use as a weapon although by now I’m actually beginning to wonder what good that would do if there really are ghosts? For an instant I began to regret being Ebenezer Scrooge as the ghosts of Christmas past & present were clearly gathered in the corridor, awaiting the arrival of the ghost of Christmas future…
…when in to my office, proud as you like, strolled [a service user's] cat!!!
The bloomin’ thing has been trained not to come in to the unit and to use its cat-flap in [the service user's] room to go out. Clearly it’s sussed out that nights (or night staff!) are different! It suddenly realised it was me in the building and turned and fled back to the sanctuary of [the service user's] flat!
Bah-humbug indeed!
