England match to be internet only

England's game with Ukraine on Saturday will only be shown on the internet. :o

The cost of watching the game was being advertised on Monday in the Daily Express as £4.99 if viewers signed up before midnight on Wednesday.

Charges rise to £9.99 for those who subscribe on Thursday and Friday, and £11.99 on Saturday.

The game will not be shown in pubs and only one million people can sign up to watch it. Lets hope they're not using the same technology as the Morecambe player

Plenty of pubs will be showing it, as it's on foreign satellite channels.

I expect that a lot of people, myself included, won't bother as we've already qualified. I do feel that all competitive England matches should be broadcast on free-to-air channels, although it'll probably never work out that way whilst money is the only thing which matters!

The away match rights are owned by the away FA. Free to air channels won't/can't pay the amout that they ask for.

Further to the conversation regarding Morecambe Player and the official Morecambe website, the rights to the game were sold to Perform who are the technology people behind Football League Interactive, Player and the sites of 78 football clubs.

Personally I think its a joke.

No, it's no joke. Turns out Setanta had got the rights for this game but we know what happened there! There were'nt any bids from UK free channels so the owners went down this route :x

I see Sven is one of the presenters. He pops up everywhere at the moment

The Odeon Cinema in Blackpool are also showing it :o

Why? Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales games aren't on free channels.

Take it up with the Ukrainian FA. Though why they should be bothered about English fans seeing the game for free, I don't know.

I personaly am not too bothered about the match not being shown on TV but I just can't see many people paying to watch a world cup qualifying match when we have allready qualified even if I was at home unless I could go and watch in the pub I would not be watching just my point of view but I don't don't know anyone who is going to pay to watch it

I think this might be a first and last time it happens. Most of the people who will want to watch it on the internet will know how to get it online for free anyway. I can't see this venture making it's money back.

I will be showing it in the York - I have subscribed to the internet service and will show it through one of my screens. At the same time the Rugby League play off final will take place so you can come along and get to see both events.

The whole situation stinks as Sky charge pubs a fortune to show the games then they cant be arsed to bid for the rights.

In Germany all their national games are shown on terrestrial tv and their FA don't believe in selling the rights to the highest bidder. They believe everyone should watch the national team and it should be a national event.

They also make the players all wear the same sponsor stuff addidas, even if players have their own boot deals etc when it comes to the national team they have to wear the national sponsors.

Germany is a strange example, as PayTV is not as prevelant as in the UK.

The FA, or British government, cannot dictate to foreign FAs who to sell their rights to. The foreign FA want to generate as much money as possible, and a match against England is one of the best income generators there is.

As I've already said, the English fans get a better deal than the other home nations, as the FA decided to sell home competitive matches to a FTA broadcaster, whereas Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland matches are all on Sky.
