Totally irrelevant.
Harping back to old times?
I dont think you are part of the majority Peter. You seem to have a pretty relaxed lifestyle, Nice pension and work because you choose to or because you like to treat you and the missus to some nice weekends away (nowt wrong with that BTW). Maybe your lifestyle fits into those hours? Mine doesnt. I work long hours and regularly dont get home until after 7pm.
There is no way either myself or my wife could get to the supermarket in those hours without it being inconvenient (We both work and have four children). On the odd occasion I do go out (maybe once per month), I prefer to have a leisurely night out that is unrushed and enjoy the extended hours that the pubs offer, without having to go to a nightclub to carry on the evening. I dont do nightclubs anymore unless it is a special occasion, but used to enjoy them when I was younger (I even managed not to ever get into a fight or get arrested!). Both of my nephews use nightclubs and manage to stay out of trouble. I, and I suspect most people, have never been to a restaurant purely in order to get drunk, or without having a meal.
Your solution would have a negative effect and see the element you are trying to discourage binge drink upto 10.30 and then find somewhere else to drink (possibly in a public place unsupervised) afterwards with the cheap booze they got at 5.30.
Now if you said 'No daytime drinking' where people cant get tanked up all day on cheap happy hours and then roll home to hit the internet, I may agree with you!
What about shutting the pubs all day until 8pm, not selling booze in Supermarkets until 7pm? That could have a positive effect and would fit in better with my lifestyle.
You say that you are sick of the subject. Why bring it up?
