Carling Cup observations

Carling Cup observations

Postby Christies Child » Wed Aug 12, 2009 8:16 am

4 headed goals from crosses

PNE corners all onto the edge of the 8 yard box and the ball attacked by PNE players. In contrast our corners lacked quality in delivery

PNE given too much space especially from the short corner for their second scored by header from smallest payer on the pitch

PNE wingers given freedom of Deepdale too often

At least we didn't resort to fouls only 6 given in the entire game. The first on 25th minute by either team.

MFC goal attempts 13 7 on target 6 off PNE 22 17 on 5 off

If only our penalty had gone in......a case of 'what if'

Still proud of our lads. PNE revenge match for them and creidt due to their attitude. Compliments on radio from their manager about our play. Insisted prior to the game that his players gave us due respect.

Yes any team doing their homework this years just needs to realise to run at pace at our full backs and then whip a cross in.

I just hope we go back to the 5 at the back on Saturday.

Personally, that's the easy option. For me we stick to 3 5 2 and go for 3 points by playing positive football. Attack from off and create problems for them rather than trying to stop them creating problems by being defensive

You can still play positive attacking football with 4-4-2 formation ;) . 5 at back is far too defensive :x . Agreed ;)

But with 4-4-2 we will get overun for fun especially at full back and midfield we just don't have the players to do it.

At times last night it was nearly a 6 at the back :o as Duffy and Wilson were having to drop so deep.

Moss ................ Haining..........Bentley .............Wilson .

Im sure this back 4 is capable of keeping most teams at bay in League 2. ;)

Wouldn't disagree with that. Sammy however will remain loyal to Danny which is creditable but time catches up with everybody sooner or later. If he persists in playing him then the centre of defence (sweepers role?) where he doesn't have to keep up with speedy wingers may be a get out.

If Jimbo is back I would agree with that but if Jimbo isn't we will have to stay with the 5.

a few things i picked up on last night aswell as the bad defending from crosses and corners was that opposition players are given way too much time in the space between the midfield and the defence and they can confortably pick a pass, we had the same problem against hereford for their first goal, Danny adams looked tired about half an hour into the game and I know its been said a million times but he's definately too slow to play in the full back position and he was backing off tackles and leaving the ball for others to chase, once I heard the team sheet i was never really expecting a win with jevons injured we didnt have the cutting edge upfront that we needed, the first 20 mins were good and then we won the penalty but there was a few times when craney got the ball in the PNE area and choked I have a feeling that if jevons was playing we would've atleast scored 2 maybe 3 but It wasnt to be... still proud of the lads they never gave up and kept going right to minute 90 on the plus side duffy looked threatening and Haining looked composed with the ball and some of his defending was top quality all in all a decent performance but in the end the better team won. Now we can concentrate on the league!

Lets hope as time goes on that we can improve on last nights performance, as there will come a time i.e the F.A. Cup when we will have to play higher league opposition and take every little chance that comes our way. That penalty could have made all the differance last night . who knows .
