O/T Wild Camping

Greetings All:

The USA Shrimps are coming for summer hols (will be going to games, natch) but we also want to do some hiking in Scotland, prolly the Cairngorms. Things have changed since I were a lad and I noticed that access laws have changed and you can apparently pretty much pitch your tent wherever you like. Has anybody done this 'Wild Camping' up in bonny Scotland (or elsewhere in the UK) and what is your experience?

There will be me, the missus, and USA Shrimplet plus maybe another three folk in one other tent. Or, does anyone know of any good campsites up near Cairngorm (other than Rothiemurchus, it's booked up)? We're looking to head up there August 17-20 or so.

Thanks for any and all advice, suggestions, etcetera.

Not sure what the right of access laws are like but I've camped up on the upper esk valley just under Sca Fell quite a few times and never been bothered. Obviously there's no 'facilities' so you have to remember the old saying, 'take only pictures, leave only footprints' and then think about the logistics of when nature calls!

Occasionally don a little mascara but haven't been wild since Mother, Mabel and I hit Killarney mid 1980 ducky.

i think you can still do wild camping in Scotland in a lot of parts, just don't do it on land what looks obviously like farm land, as you will probably just get earache off farmers stressed out with the thought there animals might get out if you leave gates open etc

oh and last time i did wild camping was somewhere between scafell-pike & eskdale green, and just like the above is getting at, just be discreet in general when wild camping anywhere

I seem to remember that you may put a tent up, if you are above the last wall/fence...?
