I have a good idea of the targets but as they are not (as far as I know) 100% done yet it would be silly to bandy their names about. We've seen before how players have been close to signing but then someone else is alerted and we miss out. Occasionally players string one club along and agree terms, only to squeeze more money out of the club they really want to go to.
I don't think that's the case with these lads but... you never know.
Unless someone has been spinning me a line, though (and I have no reason at all to believe that to be the case) then Gash, Boulding and Mellor are wind-ups if anyone is saying we're after them.

If you have an idea of who they are, shrimper, can you at least tell us if they sound any good?

In fairness to James he wasn't expecting any names to be divulged, just an observation by Glen as to his thoughts about the calaber of the player involved and in particular if he ticks all the boxes.
Anyhow, no doubt by this time next week, we'll have all the ins and outs of the player(s).....worts and all!

I am under the impression, albeit from an unreliable (sic) source that the new right back is Darren Moss, of Shrewsbury fame.
What would anyone think of that...come on Glen, you can confess all now!

I know that - I reported it in the paper. But when we said we were moving on and wouldn't go above our valuation, that was it. We've not been back in for him and we are not looking at Charles at all. Trust me, that one ain't happening.
On the others I think they would both be good signings (for what I know about football!) but that I'd still want Sammy to be successful in getting his other target of a more experienced striker as well.
That done, I think we'd have a decent squad and, if we don't have a poor start to the season, could maintain our position just on the fringe of the play-offs.
Stanners coming back fit would be a boost and if Duffy progresses as he did game by game then it could be interesting.

Ah but you don't want to believe everything you read in the paper!

I was just thinking yesturday, what a team we'll have if Sammy brings in 2/3 quality players.
Roche
Darren Moss ???
Bentley
Artell / McStay
Adams
Wainwright
Drummond
Stanley
Duffy
New Striker ???
New Striker ???
That midfield looks awesome, let's remember that Wainwright was playing with an injury for along time last season, so it's going to be interesting to see how him and Duffy play together.

Would you go 4-4-2?
I actually have concerns over left back/left wing back I think with the full backs we will have 4-4-2 would be better as Moss isn't to clever going forward apparently and Adams would be left back.
If we played wing backs then I am not sure would Wainwright have to play left wing back?

That midfield looks distinctly average to me.

Yes we still need someone who is going to put balls through to the strikers.

I agree, but who would you replace?

It's really quite simple. Either we stick to a formation that worked last season (and don't forget, our defence looks like it's only going to gain 1 new face and the midfield none) or we change to 4-4-2 and get overrun in both departments.

Depends, I suppose, if the new right back we get is more of a solid fullback than an attacking one.
Had we gone for someone like Laurence Wilson (sorry to keep banging on about him but I rated him, unless his two games against us were isolated occasions of excellence), then we could have used two wingbacks.
But, as has been said, IF we get a more defensive minded right back and we want to include Duffs, then I reckon it'll have to be 4-4-2.
I think Stanners coming back fully fit (fingers crossed) and Duffy having a full -pre-season (if he progresses like I think he can) can be a major difference next season.
Stanners was in good form before he got injured, Wainer didn't settle until the second half of the season, Duffy took a while to even start showing what he can do, Drummy got better as the season went on....
If we can get them all firing from the start I think - with the addition of two decent strikers (and that's going to be a big task) - it's not a bad line-up at all.

I agree about the midfield been over run it's the one thing I have always commented on ever since our first game against Barnet.
However the thing with 3-5-3 is where are we going to play Duffy, wainwright, Cutis.
and if we get these strikers we need to get balls into them which we never seem to do which means we need out and out wingers.

if you play 3-5-3 every week you stand a good chance of winning the league

I think the plan is to play 5-3-2 next season. We are still lacking pacey defenders and Sammy would probably make more drastic changes to the squad if we were to change formation.
