Anyone able to offer some advice about video software?

I've got a Canon EOS 5D Mk2 which as well as being a super-dooper SLR also has HD Video capabilities. The SLR bit I can use. The taking video's I'm still crap but getting an idea.

Where I'm completely stuffed is what to do next! It saves the files as .MOV I want to be able to edit them and save them to DVD for playing on the TV. I'm messing about at the moment before I go on holiday.

I would prefer the software to be...

cross-platform, so I use the same software on the PC and the Mac (like Dreamweaver or Photoshop is)

open source or cheap (I'm now desperately skint due to err... holiday & camera!)

simple

or VERY simple?

What are the chances of all three of those? I'll settle for two out of three...

I use Ulead Videostudio. Don't know it works on Mac too but you can do quite professional looking things without being very good with computers.

I use Ulead Videstudio and Sony Vegas, neither come cheap. .Mov is the xtn for Quicktime movies, quicktime isn't expensive for the full version and you can do basic editing.

Avid Media Composer is a nice simple bit of software which is easy to use. A favorite for students doing media studies. the only down side to avid is there support is pants.

It's hard to beat iMovie - it is cheap (already on your Mac?) and really easy to use. It is not cross-platform but 2 out of 3 aint bad.

Go for Studio Pro, which costs just £69.99 (cost-effective even for tax exiles). Good piece of kit for dropping in sounds, effects, titles etc.
