If its true then its a win win for Shearer.
If he keeps them up he's a hero, if they get relegated its not his fault.

I hope that means the end of the boring b*stard as a TV pundit. With a bit of luck he will do us all a favour and take Garth Crooks, Lee Dixon, Carlton Palmer and the rest of the gang with him as his backroom staff

Wednesdayite just the person I see Dave Richards is behind a £4 million pound investment into Chesterfield for their new ground. Is this the same Dave Richards of Wednesday and if so I thought he was unpopular reading on the Football Forum they seem quite happy with him and one wednesday fan said he was a legend :o

I always though he was the bloke behind the collapse of Wednesday and could never work out how he managed to get so far up in the FA but I am now thinking I have the wrong chap.

What a fantastic incisive appointment!

With his experience at managing at Premiership level, Newcastle are certain to avoid relegation!

How ridiculous. Another example of heart over head decision by the Chairman.

Certain for the drop now, I reckon.

In fairness to Shearer, at least he's willing to put his career where his mouth is. Get all the buggers off their arses and into coaching/management I say. If it's all so frigging easy looking at videos and Prozone to solve things let's see them keep a team going. So come on down: Hansen, Gray, Lawrenson, Keown, Dixon et al.

These guys are not daft. They work one, maybe two days a week and there is no stress or strain involved. They have the easiest job in the world of pointing out the obvious and get a decent pay packet.

None of these guys are going to go the way of the heart attack or the bottle, or have the indignity of press intrusion and public scrutiny on how good they are at thier jobs.

I am sure Hansen, Gray, Lawrenson, Keown, Dixon et al are not remotely interested. ;)

They must have offered Shearer a bucket load of money to take that club on as well as playing to his own hopes and dreams.

Good luck in The Championship! At least he wont have the above 'pundits' analysis to contend with!

I don't see how you can knock the fella really - a truly great player- in a game when the word 'great' is over used.
If your a NUFC fan or player it must be a real shot in the arm when there in the thick of it. I think he's taken it on for all the right reasons - he's a local lad , certainly doesn't need the money or hassle that might come with the job. I like Shearer , a model professional really and he should get players to play for him but whether thats enough I don't know ?
The bits I've seen of the 'Toon this season have been pretty poor and I don't think there's enough quality about - you can't rely on Michael [I'm not injury prone] Owen really and Barton's just a highly paid thug - a very good keeper has already jumped ship - I think Gutteriez[?] looks a decent player.

I wish him and NUFC well , always had a soft spot for the 'Toon , their fans deserve a bit of a break as well , great support whenever I've come across them - it just seems there jinxed as a club.

I like Shearer but I'll be delighted to see Newcastle get relegated!

Def. Win Win - if he keeps them up he'll be the champ, if they go down, he was brought in too late so not his fault and he will be the champ when he brings them back into the premiership (assuming they're not another 4 managers on by then!)

Dream job for Shearer, IMO at completely the wrong time. I think it will be difficult to save Newcastle from relegation given the fixtures they have remaining and their current form, which is a bit of a shock when you look at the fairly decent squad they have on paper.

Seems that Newcastle want to go for the continental approach....i.e. having various people involved in what are traditionally seen as the football manager's job, and leave the manager to motivate and coach the players. Such a system seems actually more aligned with the real world.....but in football the manager seems to be ultimately accountable for everything that happens....hence you can't blame them for wanting control over all factors that may influence the teams performances.

Clearly a major factor is player recruitment, if you are going to be judged on the performance of the team and the results they achieve then you don't want incumbent players brought in by somebody else being the architect of your downfall. The big question is....will Shearer be a yes man, or will he want to be his own boss with complete control over the football side of the club? If he is another Keegan then it won't work......

good player in his day, but talks shite about football either that or he's jealous or as a problem with David Beckham, he said when Fabio Capello first picked Becks, saying well why when there's at least 3 right sided England players better in the premiership better than him, and he should retire gracefully

id like to know at least one of them, even though Becks his past his very best!

oh and id love to see em go down, Newcastle fans need to chill out, going through all these Managers and forget this obsession about being a top 4 club just because of there Fan-base

He was surely one of the worst players ever to play for England, only a turnip could have picked him. This was followed by a less than stellar career as a manager but for some reason the BBC thinks that this qualifies him to be a TV pundit
