2nd season syndrome

2nd season syndrome

Personally this is just a load of rubbish and is in peoples heads - our first season after 38 games 53 points this season 38 games played 52 points also goal difference is slightly better than last season.

There's me thinking the term 2nd season syndrome was a physical thing. Sarcasm aside it could be argued we had it but the team have picked themselves up. It happens so often when a team gets promoted they're full of confidence and fear no one but the next season struggle to continue that push. I think the theory of second season syndrome kicks in after xmas in the first season. Happened to us last year at that time, this season in the Prem its Hull.

Also happened to Aldershot this year

I think in league 2 it is because the teams that come up are seen as not good enough, small clubs etc and teams don't do their homework so they pull off a few suprises. When the the return fixture comes the teams don't want to get caught out again and do their homework.
For example when we played teams for the second time last season they mainly doubled up on Thommo where in the first game he had loads of space

Quite suprised that you haven't given credit to me for that statement Phil :o

I've been saying that for years, even at Blue Sq level.

Since the premier league started only 3 teams have improved on their first season position after being promoted to the prem. So in the words of Rafa Benitez, fact.

Well done Badger but there's 46 games in a season, FACT. No one can deny we had a poor start to the season. I wonder if we would have gone on this run if we were in a relegation battle (ie no one had points deducted) and the players were low on confidence. Could it be that because we were safe so early on the players were able to relax and go to away games to win and not sit back for the draw?

I do think that in some cases there is a period of time where opposing teams get used to your style of play, and as such you need to adjust. In some instances this happens during the second season (hence the phrase), though for us I think this happened earlier. I think we were lucky in that we got found out towards the back end of last season, and had our wobble split over two seasons.

If you take the last 23 games of the 07/08 season, and the first 23 games of the 08/09 season we accumulated a total of 49 points, which at the end of the 05/06 season was not enough to maintain Oxford United's league status. Fact :D .
