To save the 'best' thread becoming mixed up, James can kick off the worst...

Personally, I always thought that Keiran should have been a midfielder and would have been reasonable there, but I agree he was an awful defender! And is it my crap memory, or wasn't Alan Morgan a midfielder? I'm sure the delightlful 3-0 up at Southport, Morgan comes on as sub, five minutes later* it is 3-2 and he's taken off again, he was in the midfield.

*Okay, it may have been 15 minutes that he lasted. Either way, it was far too long!

You're thinking of Tony Hughes :P

--------------------Banks--------------------

Rushden----T. Hughes---???------------Lavelle

Gardner---------Sang---Gouck----------Keeling

-------------Withers----Holden--------------

That's what I've got so far. I'm sure I'll think of some more.

That's the one. By God he was a steaming pile of antelope feces. Unless he or a member of his immediate/extended/extremely distant/long lost family reads this board in which case I think he rocks.

Re right back position: I've just recalled Neil Uberschar, who I didn't think was half bad actually, but takes the position by default.

I'm obviously of the same thinking as The Fury! Dave Gardiner was probably the most talented player ever to sign for Morecambe, but was also the lasiest. Only ever turned it on when his mates, Beckham & Giggs were watching! Married a lass from Hollyoaks and made a fortune as a football agent, so I bet he's gutted to be named in our 'all time worst'

I would have to have Graham Gill playing up front, most 'fondly' remembered by me at Hyde Utd, on their plastic pitch. A plane was coming in to land and flew quite low over the ground. Graham stopped and looked up, watching it... while the game carried on around him! (admittedly, it was chuffin' low!) Mind you, he was from Workington originally, where they still point at planes even now.

Not sure I'd have Kenny at LB but can't think who I would have at the moment.

I'd also have to have Derek Lancaster up front. That's the Derek Lancaster who played for us 'the second time arround'. Having played for us in the 60's & early 70's, he returned for a Morecambe old boys v Lancaster City old boys charity match in the 80's. Don Gubbage was so impressed, he signed him up! I can only assume he was cheap... very cheap! Talking of Don Gubbage, he'd be my appointment as the worst manager for the worst team!

Barlow shouldn't be anywhere near a worst Morecambe XI, it was his goals that propelled us to the Hereford playoffs IIRC

Can't be too bothered to think of one myself, but jerome watt, Shwan Jalal, Ryan Cresswell, would all be in it, and Keiran Walmsley would be the captain

I struggle to remember players who were bad and slipped away quickly so maybe I was a little harsh with one or two.

And I forgot about Jerome Watt so I'll sub him into my line up for Barlow.

Must say that this is a terribly cruel thread. I don't like to think of any former Shrimps players not giving of their best.

Some names mentioned on here have served the club well and deserve our respect NOT our derision.

I'd love to hear your justification for Swanny (someone who played at a higher level and, in my view, was quality in his first two seasons), Celi (woeful for a long time but had one great season that sent his ego into orbit, but not our worst player surely) and Murphs (who was much better than some we've had).

Possibly a more interesting thread (the answer to this one is Alan Morgan in all positions) is players we thought were not good enough but went on to play at a high level.

Shwan Jalal - Bournemouth / Scott Loach??? - (England Under 21)
Ryan Cresswell - Phil Edwards (Accy)
Dean Howell (Colchester) - Terry McFlynn??? (Sydney)

I don't think that we "didn't think he was good enough" but we could get a quality goalie for a month with someone else paying the bulk of the cost of his services. ;)

I know it is all about opinions and everyone is different but Shirls in the worst eleven is IMO a joke.

Our back four played ten yards further forward, squeezing the opposition, when Shirls played as he had a much missed talent of holding the ball up, nobody in the Conference could get it off him.

And his equaliser at Rushout & Bagodiamonds to make it 3-3 when we were 3 down after 25 minutes completed one of the finest come-backs ever in the Conference.

Would be starting or maybe just on the bench in the best 11 for me.

Quite easily. He's the worst of the left backs I have seen. Doesn't mean he really deserves to be there. We've been blessed with good full backs on both sides over the years.

Sorry, but Darren Hughes was a hopeless left back, positionally and distributionally wayward, and he came well after Ben left, but I will let you off as he thankfully didn't last long, maybe half a season.
