I hope he signs too but i think it will depend on wages and transfer fee etc but i think he would be better playing for us week in week out than maybe a bit part player elsewhere

I don't think he is unfortunately. He doesn't want to move up here permanantly (or so I hear) and apparantly he's on 3k a week in total which is a lot for us to dish out.

IF we are paying a high percentage of his rumoured salary, I feel we can do as well if not better by having someone who is also proven at our level.

Not at all.

However I suspect that come the end of the season, if not before, players agents will be touting their portfolio of players to Sammy and other managers looking for the best deals for themselves (and the players?) amongst which I'm sure there will be some credible alternatives and options available. Times will be hard, in line with the general economic climate, and footballers will be casualties like everybody else. It may well be that there will be numerous players of proven pedigree who will be under condsideration.

Sammy has said that we need to progress both on and off the field. Off the field we all know what is before us. On the field to progress we need more quality in numerous areas and particularly up front where our inabilty to convert all those draws into wins could well cost us at least a place in the play-offs.

It may well be that Rene and the club come to an agreement, but we will still need at least one additional striker of proven ability to put pressure on the others.

The close season will be very interesting, with wage demands significantly reduced to ensure a job. With clubs that are effectively trading insolvently finally having to get their house in order, I can see many clubs reducing squad sizes and wage bills. Many player who are coming towards the end of their contract will be getting a little worried about how they will pay the mortgage for the next couple of years. Sad on an individual, human level but a great opportunity for a well run, financially secure club to start attracting talent. Where-as in the past, 'little Morecambe, miles from anywhere' wasn't an attractive proposition, suddenly 'financially secure Morecambe who are looking up not looking at administration' suddenly is.

Obviously, the last time I suggested this as the reason why we shouldn't sign players earlier in the season or during the January window, (that and faith in the existing players), someone accused me repeatedly of complacency and that we were in dire straights, likely to be relegated. It would be interesting to read their sage like thoughts on the current situation... Ned, any comment?

Very true....

Some of us have had to take massive pay cuts to retain employment. Professional sportsmen will also have to make sacrifices.....unless you are amongst the greedy so called elite!
