ShrimpsVoices on the move!

ShrimpsVoices on the move!

Postby Keith » Mon Jan 27, 2025 2:08 pm

I've bitten the bullet and bought some new hosting, which will have SSL Certificate included, so anyone getting a warning that the website is unsafe, it should stop that. And, HOPEFULLY fix the need to log in every visit.

It SHOULD be seamless (HA!) but I'm quite capable of cocking it up.

This should keep working while it migrates. But, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

I'm still in discussions with...

Still trying to migrate the entire database across, so as not to lose the history of SV and people not need to re-register. I tried to build the database on Tuesday, but didn't manage it. Hopefully I'll get some more spare time soon. Reading the 'how to' guides make my head hurt!  8-)

Hi Keith, just read this. Please don't move as-is. I know it keeps all the history, but the forum version is very old i.e. not as secure as it could be, even with an SSL certificate.

Unless you're going to update phpbb as well, it's painful but you're better starting afresh, preferably using forum software that's an auto-install on your new hosting - it should include the ability to update from your control panel in the future, keeping it secure.

You are right about the age of the forum, so my plan, if I can, is to move it all, then do all of the updates, to make sure that it works, before redirecting to the updated version. It is still maintained, the latest version was updated late last year. I don't want to update this one as is, in case it falls over completely!

If I can't move it over, then, as you say, it would have to be a new start.

Any chance it can have a "LIKE" option to give a "thumbs-up" to opinions we agree with, without the need to post ourselves?
