This was taken from the Daily Record at 8pm tonight ….

Carson to join Morecambe

Trevor Carson is joining Morecambe on loan for the season.

The Shrimpers had previously sought a permanent deal but Dundee United are keen to evaluate their options in the summer.

Hartlepool had also been keen to sign the Northern Irish goalkeeper.

Superb news if it's true. A full international goalkeeper at a club like ours is incredible. Feel sorry for the others but we need a goalkeeper of his quality.

I guess this would mean Jokull goes back to Reading?

Probably unless someone comes in for Letheren , maybe Bradford City , then Trevor could fight it out with Jokull.

If Carson arrives as a loanee, Jokull is almost certain to return to Reading IMO.

You can only select a maximum of 5 loan players in a match squad I think. If you were to allocate two of these selections to goalkeepers it would limit your options for outfield players; 3 from Phillips, McCalmont, Jones, Bedeau… all of whom will generally be in the squad (at least, if not starting) when fit.

With this in mind, I can see why we wanted to sign Mark Carson (assuming he is signing on loan as per rumour) to a permanent deal - especially if we are planning to use the loan market again in this window without sending the current lads on loan back to their parent clubs. I see no reason why we would send Callum or Alfie back - both have been improving and are relatively consistent.

Not sure if Jokull could be the one to leave..... it could and for me should be Kyle who is probably on a good salary compared with Jokull whose wages may be partially funded by Reading :?: :?: :?:

Kyle has still got a few years left in his career but a loan deal to a National League club would be ideal for all parties concerned. Jokull is still learning his trade and is an ideal back up 'keeper BUT it all depends on whether Reading want him to play on a regular basis as to him staying with us....or not.

Confirmed - and from the video and article on site, definitely looks like Jokull has gone. Real shame as he's a lovely guy and has a lot of ability, but after that first international break his form has gone off a cliff following some promising early signs.

Very pleased with this signing of Carson though. Fits the bill pretty much exactly for what we need, particularly considering the centre back we've gotten in is a younger one.

It is similar to the other young lads, Jokull is not what we need right now. He seems a proper character and no doubting his ability but we need experience to get us through the rest of this season.

Carson seems to be a very good signing and I am impressed that the club are bringing in players now rather than scratching about at 10pm on 31st Jan.

Highly improbable for the reason I outlined.

You can only have 5 loan players in a match day squad. Given our reliance on loanee players in outfield positions, it would seem unlikely that the manager will assign two of these slots to goalkeepers when the chances of using the sub keeper are extremely remote. Doing this would limit the managers options for outfield loanee players - all of which feature regularly/start.

As we have 2 permanent keepers on the the books, I think the opportunities for Jokull to be involved on a match day (even as a sub) going forwards are now virtually zero if Carson has been brought here as the starter (which is surely the case, as he has stated his reason for leaving Dundee United is to get game time). If you were to select both Carson and Jokull, it would mean that you can't select one of the following:

Adam Phillips
Alfie McCalmont
Callum Jones
Jacob Bedeau
Any other players that we sign on loan

Got to agree with RRW. No point having two loan goalkeepers, especially when we have a contracted 'keeper who is a similar standard as one of the loan players.

Hopefully, with this signing done quickly, Jokull & Reading have time to find him another club before the end of the month, where he'll get the game time that he needs.

Fingers crossed, Carson is what we need. He certainly sounds decent. Great game for him to make his debut in!

Read somewhere that TC is a real family man and whenever possible likes to take one of his children to school on a Monday morning before travelling to Dundee from his Newcastle home.

His normal journey to Dundee from Newcastle is 188 miles and takes around 3,30 hours.

His new journey to Morecambe from Newcastle is 124 miles taking around 2.30 hours.

His move to us will hopefully still allow him to take his daughter school on a Monday especially when SR allowed him to arrive for Monday training later than the others when at Motherwell.

Sounds to me as though there is a lot of respect for each other which is good to hear.

:) :) :)
