SHRIMPS EDGE IT
Burscough again showed the watching supporters further reasons to be optimistic for the coming season, despite a narrow defeat in their latest pre season game. League two side Morecambe left Victoria park 1-0 winners thanks to a Aaron Taylor 13th minute goal.

The Linnets began the game well and were unlucky not to be ahead in the opening 10 minutes. A Brian Moogan corner was headed off the line following an Allan Smart touch. However, the visitors could themselves gone ahead shortly after when Morecambe saw a goal bound shot cleared off the line by some resolute defending.

Moments later a superb James Olson cross from the left found Tony Evans unmarked at the back post. Unfortunately the strikers attempt to head the Linnets ahead narrowly cleared the cross bar.

In what had been an entertaining start to the game it would be Sammy McIlroy's side who would take the lead on 13 minutes. An underhit back pass was latched on to by Taylor who raced clear with just Hibbert in the Burscough goal between him and the goal. As Hibbert narrowed the angle, Taylor's shot was partially blocked but the ball's momentum ensured it rolled into the empty net.

The goal had slightly come against the run of play but like Saturday, Burscough didn't let this set back affect them and they sought an equaliser with no shortage of determination.

Tony Evans was leading the line well alongside Allan Smart and with James Olson pulling the midfield strings, Burscough created further opportunities. It was Evans, making his debut, who came closest when his spin turn and shot from the edge of the area forced a diving save at the foot of the post by Scott Davies.

Burscough's counterpart, Zak Hibbert, had his moment in the spot light just before the interval when he provided a great block from a Morecambe forwards clear sight at goal. The resultant follow up was also cleared this time by the boot of a Burscough defender.

Burscough again began the second half the brighter of the sides as John Cass fired off 3 shots in the opening 10 minutes. The last of those forcing Davies into handling well.

In between the Cass attempts Allan Smart had a good chance to draw Burscough level. A through ball saw the former premiership striker get clear of his marker with just the goalkeeper in front of him. Unfortunately his shot was not the cleanest of strikes and the ball went narrowly wide of the upright.

There then followed further substitutions by Joey Dunn following the initial half time changes. These seemed to knock the greens out of their stride for a period of time and Morecambe became increasingly dominant in possesion.

With the visitors having the better of it at this stage it took some more determined defending and a good save from substitute American goal keeper Kevin Davies to keep the score at 1-0 to the visitors.

To their credit Burscough kept trying hard to find a way back into the game but just fell short of finding that elusive equaliser, before hopes were ended by the sound of referee Bankes final whistle.

It had been another performance full of commitment and endeavour from a young Linnets side and the supporters left satisfied that they had again seen a Burscough side who had given their all for the green shirt.

Slightly biased report, thought there was 2 teams playing.Morecambe played some good football like the previous night at Barrow, keeping the ball on the ground.Always difficult with so many trialists playing.I think we have a stronger squad this season with competitition for places especially midfield.Selection problems for Sammy but great for the team.Bring on Preston north end.

Was behind the goal for that one it should have been a corner cause the goalie actually got a touch on it - think it would have sneaked in otherwise ;)
