Those of us of a certain age will remember him as the wonderfully calming voice behind such children's classics as Pogles Wood, Noggin the Nog, The Clangers and Bagpuss.
Although, by today's standards, his programmes were crudely animated and not much more than a moving picture book, his narration brought the characters to life.
A true pioneer and legend.
