Lack of Pace

Hi new user here.
Last year I was concerned about the lack of pace within the team with the exception of a couple of players. Teams who were pacy appear to frighten the life out of us. I hope this is something Sammy will be looking to improve. I think Jimbo and Artell were a good combination but looked slow similarly up from Curtis and Twiss were a yard, or 3 in Curtis case, off the pace.

Does anyone know whether Neil Wainwright has much pace?

I hope that if we get another new signing he has a good deal of pace, especially Thommo's gone. We saw last season how at this level, pace is really something you need.

I think we definitely could benefit from a speedy pair of legs, espicially now Thomos gone. But having said that, pace isn't the be all and end all, it needs to be accompanied by the necessary skill to use the pace well. Pace without the necessary skill to use it wisely will just be counter productive... look at Dean Howell...

Curtis's game was never about Pace due to his muscular build, Twiss was the same after all that Gym work, tends to slow you down!
It's physical strength, holding the ball up and being able to put the ball away are his best attributes, He's always been a decent finisher inside the box.

Curtis never has or ever will be a Rolls Royce, more of a Sherman Tank, neither will he ever be a qaulity wide sided player, despite the fact SM keeps playing him in that position. If he plays at all, it should be as an old fashioned forward. I,m not knocking the player, he gives 100% every time he plays but when played out wide he looks slow, rarely takes on a defender and his first touch is xxxx, also the amount of times he passes back is painful. At times i feel sorry for the lad, it must be hard being played out of position, but like i said earlier, he does give 100%, however, we are now league 2 and the hard facts are that if you are weak in a certain position you soon get caught out.

the fact is that you need pace on the wing, which tommo had
wayne doesnt have any, he cant and shouldnt play on the wing
a few years back when twissy came first he was played on the left a few times in the season and had some pace and you could see him beating the defenders, although this was against some of the weaker conference players
also last year we saw carl play at the left on occations and, i dont know if anyone noticed, but what a difference it made with left side attacking play to get those needed crosses in, espcially when SM favours Blinkers, he can then use his height advantage well

Pace is essential in the modern game, how many times were we hit on the counter attack last season and more to the point how often did we not score because of a lack of pace up front.
Thommo was the only player we had in an attacking position with any real speed, would Danny Carlton have scored the winning goal at Wembley without his pace?.
Pace might not be everything, Danny Adams is a testament to that with his superb positioning but it sure does help.

Looks like the four players mentioned above have improved a little recently

A player with pace getting round the back of the defenders and then being able to put a great bal diagonaly across the box to players like Twissy and Rene Howe is what we fans have been screaming for all season. Maybe our new aquasition is the answer??

Wainer's been doing that pretty regularly recently, Mick.

So now we have the option of playing with pace on both wings, now that could be exciting a bit like the days when Thommo and Elam were playing in the same side.
