Stockport have had 3 bids turned down for Carl Baker according to our official web-site. Any idea what sort of fee we would be looking at and do you think its likely he would now ask for a transfer as he knows there is interest? Thanks in advance.

I think we'd have to be looking at £8 Million to be honest .......

I don't honestly know , but I don't think he's desperate to leave Morecambe , quite the opposite he likes the area , club etc. No disrespect but he won't be overly flattered by Stockport , he's had Wolves , C Palace , Blackpool showing interest. Judging by the link your gaffas looking elsewhere now anyway. IMO we need Baker - on his day a real handful for any defence.

Hopefully Stockport do look elsewhere now, it just goes to show how difficult it is to acquire new players even if you do have money spend.

I just hope that we don't find ourselves in another 'will he or wont he' saga as we did with Thommo at the end of his contract.

I don't want to see Carl sold for peanuts but there comes a point when you have to say 'take the money and run'.

£250K less Southports cut would be a nice warchest for Sammy.

I appreciate what you're saying, and in no way am I trying to shoot you down, but..
What if this is Carl's only chance to play in League One. He's 25 now, and he may never be offered a deal like this again. Yes Carl might like living here, and he might love our club. Sometimes though, the offer of bigger wages, and the chance to test yourself against higher opposition can often be too good an offer to refuse.
Yes obviously we want the right price for him, but I hope that the club do the sensible thing, as they did with Thommo and let the lad have a chance to prove himself if the right offer is there. I know if someone offered me the chance to earn more wages to do the job I loved, I wouldn't turn it down, and I wouldn't expect my employers to stand in my way. Yes money isn't everything, but football is a short and unpredictable career, and with a young family he needs to earn the money while its right there in front of him.
If he does go, good luck to him. It would be nice to see 4 recent, ex morecambe players making a name for themselves in the higher leagues. But, if things don't work out, and he is still a Morecambe player next season then I'm sure everyone will be behind him 100% and not think him selfish, or any less of a Morecambe player because he wanted a chance to better himself.

I like what you're saying there Jody, ANY League Two player SHOULD be looking to move higher and be given all the encouragement to do it.
Footballs a short career and Baker should do what Thommo, Perkins and all those others showing promise have done and seize the opportunity with both hands because it's not very often a chance comes along to test yourself against better opposition week in week out as well as playing in front of bigger crowds and paid alot more to do so.
I like Baker but he can and will be replaced should he move on :)

It could be that Sammy is preparing the way for Carl's departure by securing the signature of Craney.

For all Carl's good points and they far out weigh the bad, he does have the tendancy to be too greedy and still has to learn when to release the ball for the good of the team.

But as a flair player who excites, he can get away with it.

Carl won't be knocking anyone's door down asking for a transfer, I reckon. He's not that type. But we wouldn't stand in his way if County offered in the region of £200k-plus (remember Southport get 30% of any fee).
But first we'd HAVE to have one or two lined up to come in. Craney (or someone of that ilk) plus at least one more secured before we'd accept Carl leaving. Perhaps a 'flair' type player - left winger or suchlike.
I don't think we'll be giving Stockport a cold 'no'! but we have to look after ourselves first. At our stage of development as a club Sammy may be looking to bring in more consistent, if less exciting, players to stabilise our position and Carl may be allowed to leave if he can do that.
I'd like to see him here for another season just because I think he can be even better next season than he was this - but, as Jody says, if we can bring in the players we want and if County match our valuation (maybe with a few extra payments depending on appearances etc and a sell-on of our own) a move could happen.

Does anyone know how to find Carl on that facebook thing ?

On the league forum one of the Stockport goons is saying he has said on Facebook that he will ask for a transfer if we won't accept their bid and that he has named Stockport County as one of his friends !

He's on facebook, the system keeps suggesting him as a friend but I haven't bothered clicking it yet. I know plenty of other people on this forum have though, maybe they'll tell us what's been typed.

Dunno about the bit asking him for a transfer, but yeah he has added Stockport County FC as one of his friends.

Cant blame him for wanting to play at the highest level he can, i just hope doesn't publicly state he wants to leave, and keeps it private so that the club can negotiate a decent sum for him i.e 200K, an that the money goes back in the transfer kitty,

Ian Craney 75k
Andy Bishop 125k

Carl is on my friends list aswell as Joe Lewis and Curtis.

The good folk of Stockport still think Baker is on his way. Is he really much kop, at your place he took us apart but that was up against a weakened defense playing poorly, didnt remember him showing much at E.P. What were your opinions of him over the season?

To be honest I don't really know. Carl keeps alot more things to himslf these days and thats probably the right thing to do.

However if I am honest I myself would like to see Carl make that move. Football is a short career and you want to play at the highest level and although I have the upmost respect for Morecambe I do feel Carl could easily make that step up and maybe do the same again next year.Who woulden't want there brother playing at the highest level ?......But then I like Morecambe I like what they have achieved I like Sammy and Mark and the set up they have. So as I said at the begining I honestly hand on heart don't know. These are my feelings and words not Carl's I haven't spoke to Carl about it much and if I had he would probably want to keep things private and professional.

" If the player doesnt want to stay, just sell him. Everyone does a job best when they do it with love. I wouldnt want any player in my team who doesnt play with heart "

Words in todays paper about a certain Mr Ronaldo from Pele himself.

Rings true right the way down the leagues. If Carl wants to go (for whatever reason), fine, let him go but we need to get as much money as possible for him especially with Scouseports sell on clause.

I am also 'friends' with him on facebook and as Carl said if someone asks to be your 'friend' you dont often turn them down. Carl has 480 'friends' on facebook ( no way does he know even half of them - He doesnt know me, and probably would not recognise me in the street) and has accepted at least 8 today (mostly Stockport fans - but i wouldnt read anything into that). What is happening is the Stockport fans are bombarding him with flattery and pleas to join them and it must be turning his head. You can only see what they are saying and not what he is saying back - if anything at all.

At the end of the day, he will do what is right for him and his family but if he is a 'professional' I just hope he goes about it the right way and does not unsettle the team.

I hope he decides to stay and gets to League 1 with us. As players such as Danny C and Chris B have found, once all the courting is over with all the promises of greatness, you are just another player in these clubs. Short career it may be, but I would rather have my name on the team sheet every week at a club like ours, than be sat on the bench or playing in the reserves for a team like Stockport (and thats no disrespect to Stockport).

Whatever happens I wish him well as he is a nice fella who is very funny, and I will always have time for him after he made my lad feel special at the Awards night, but I reckon he has a great chance to be a legend at Morecambe, and if he stuck with us, with his heart fully engaged, he would be in the shop window all season and a club even bigger than Stockport would show interest.

Come on Carl - You know it makes sense!

You can see he's said nothing, as his status does not read "Carl has written on so and so's wall"
