I wonder if Darlington agreed to pay a proportion of his 'pay off' with us ?

I think the usual wording for a player leaving before the end of a contract is 'settlement'.

In other words all parties come to an agreement about the financial aspects of the remainder of a contract.

As the article about him leaving seems to imply it doesn't look like there was any pay off. Adam knew full well the club weren't happy with him, hence the loan to Gateshead. Realising the on-going problems of his travelling he was looking (was pushed) into finding a North East club. Despite his messages on Twitter, discussions with Darlo had been going on for a number of weeks, possibly since before the end of last season. Once a deal was done it was then a case of getting him out of his contract. I think we did him a favour by letting him go, hence no payment.

Lots of facts tied together with supposition but if we paid a penny for a want away player who had been a "failed journeyman" with a club to go we'd be mad.
